Indian Engineering Services (IES) or Engineering Services Examination (ESE) comprise of engineers who work under the government of India and designated as Class – 1 officer. They administer a large segment of the public sector economy, which constitutes of Indian Railways, Power, Telecommunications, Central Water engineering, Defence service of Engineers, Central Engineering Service, namely.
The nature of work performed by these bureaucrats largely depends on their engineering branch and the service or cadre they are recruited in. The career progression goes smoothly attaining high esteem. The first position offered is that of Asst. Executive engineer and the hierarchy ends at the position of Chairman/ Managing Director.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is responsible for conducting the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) also known as Indian Engineering Services Exam 2021. The Commission will shortlist the candidates for the posts through Preliminary and Main Examination. The Online Applications can be filled from April 07, 2021 to April 27th 2021 till 6.00 PM after which the link will be disabled. The Engineering Services Prelims examination is going to be held on July 18, 2021, and the Main will be conducted on October 10, 2021.

The UPSC will release Indian Engineering Services Exam 2021 notification for over 580 vacancies. One should explore the IES notification meticulously that describes all the key details such as exam pattern, eligibility, number of vacancies, syllabus, etc. The official notification will also assist the candidates with the registration process and withdrawal of an application.
The Commission has released the notification for a total of 495 vacancies. The total number of vacancies to be filled for the post will include vacancies for the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD). However, the number of vacancies is liable to alteration.

A combined competitive examination is conducted by the UPSC for recruitment to the Indian Engineering Services. The recruitment of qualified candidates is made under the following categories:

Candidates are required to pay Rs 200 as application fee to successfully submit the application form. One can pay IES application either by depositing the money in any SBI branch by cash or through an online payment. Female/ SC/ ST/ PH candidates are exempted from the payment of IES application fee.
Note: In the case of withdrawal of the application, the fees will not be refunded.

A candidate must be either:
(a) a Citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

A candidate must have:
A candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the 1st January, 2020. i.e., he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1990 and not later than 1st January, 1999.
The upper age limit of 30 years will be relaxable up to 35 years in the case of Government servants of the following categories, if they are employed in a Department/Office under the control of any of the authorities mentioned in column 1 below and apply for admission to the examination for all or any of the Service(s)/Posts mentioned in column 2, for which they are otherwise eligible.
A candidate who has been continuously in a temporary service on a regular basis in the particular mentioned below Department/Office for at least 3 years on 1st January, 2020.

The UPSC has released the Engineering Services interview schedule 2020. The interviews will be held between March 8 and 24, 2021.

It has released the Personality Test (PT) schedule for all the branches - Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering. Candidates who have qualified in the written exam can appear for the interview with all the required documents.

The UPSC has announced the Indian Engineering Services (IES) Main exam result 2020. Candidates who have passed with flying colours in the Main exam can now appear for the interview.
The qualified candidates in the Main exam have to fill and submit a detailed application form which will be available between December 24 and January 5 to appear for the Interview/ Personality Test.
The official notice reads, "The qualified candidates are further advised to refer to the Rules of the Engineering Services Examination, 2020 notified on 25th September 2019 in the Gazette of India and the Examination Notice, which is available on the website of the Commission."

The UPSC has released the Engineering Services (Main) 2020 admit card. Candidates who have qualified in the Preliminary exam and obtain the cutoff score will be eligible for the Main exam.
One can download the admit card using their registration id or roll number. One should download the admit card and take the hard copy to the exam centre. The exam will be held on October 18. The exam will be conducted in two sessions. It has also released the exam time table for the IES 2020 Main exam.
22 September 2020
The UPSC has opened the window to revise the choice of centre for Engineering Services (Main) Examination 2020. Candidates can change the exam centre from September 8 to 13, 2020. The ESE Main exam will be conducted on October 17 and 18, 2020.
The official notice reads, "The window of submitting the revised choice of Centre by the candidates will be operational from 8th -13th September, 2020 (06.00 PM) on the Commission’s website https://upsconline.nic.in for aforesaid Examination. The candidates are advised to visit the website and submit their revised choices of Centre of the above Examination, where they are facing difficulty in taking the Examination from the Centre already chose, because of Covid-19 related difficulties. where they are facing difficulty in taking the Examination from the Centre already chose, because of COVID-19 related difficulties."
It also reads, "The candidates, who are not interested to change their Centre, are not required to log into the online system of Centre change."

The UPSC has rescheduled the Engineering Services (Main) examination 2020. The IES Main exam 2020 will be conducted on October 18, 2020. Earlier, the IES exam was scheduled on August 9. Aspirants can download the admit card at least two weeks prior to the exam date.
According to the UPSC revised exam calendar, the Commission has rescheduled the exam dates of Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) and Engineering Service Main (Main) exam 2020. Earlier, the UPSC has deferred the exam dates of several exams due to COVID outbreak.
