What is CMS Exam?

UPSC conducts the Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE) every year to recruit medical graduates into various Central Government Organizations and Services. The Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE) is conducted in accordance with the rules published by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in the Gazette of India.

UPSC Combined Medical Service Examination (CMSE) Notification released

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the notification & application form for the Combined Medical Service (CMS) exam 2025 on 19 February, 2025 . Candidates who are interested can start submitting the application form for the CMSE 2025 from 19 February to 11 March, 2025 till 6:00 PM on the official website - upsc.gov.in. The UPSC CMSE 2025 exam will be conducted on 20 July, 2025 (Sunday).

The UPSC has released the Combined Medical Service Examination 2025 notification for a total of 705 vacancies. The UPSC Combined Medical Service notification is an important document for candidates to get familiar with the exam. It consists of all important details such as the number of vacancies, the application process, important dates, exam pattern, selection process, etc. Aspirants can download the UPSC Combined Medical Services notification pdf only at the official portal.

UPSC Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE)  

Every year, the UPSC conducts the Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE) to shortlist the candidates for medical officer posts. On average, more that three lakh candidates register for the examination. The selection of the candidates will be made through an online written examination, which consists of two papers. Each paper will be of two hours duration carrying a maximum of 250 marks.

How to apply for UPSC CMS 2025?

Step 1: Go to the official website - upsc.gov.in.

Step 2: Click on the link for the UPSC CMS 2025 Application Form.

Step 3: Complete the application & enter all basic details & selecting an examination center.

Step 4: Upload all scanned copies of necessary documents.

Step 5: Proceed to Payment & pay the application fee.

Step 6: Review the filled application form once properly.

Step 7: IF all the details mentioned correctly, sumbit the application form.

Step 8: Download the copy of the UPSC CMS 2024 application for future reference.

The UPSC has released the important dates of Combined Medical Service Examination (CMSE) 2025. According to the UPSC calendar, the CMSE will take place on July 20, 2025 (Sunday).

UPSC CMSE 2025 Vacancies

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE) 2025 notification. The notification was released for a total of 705 vacancies that include PwBD categories.

The Services / Posts to which recruitment is to be made and the approximate number of vacancies to be filled are given below:

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Nationality:

    • A candidate must be either;
    • (a) a citizen of India, or
    • (b) a subject of Nepal, or
    • (c) a subject of Bhutan, or
    • (d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India; or
    • (e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
    • Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Govt. of India.
    • A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him by the Government of India.
  2. Education qualification:

    For admission to the examination a candidate should have passed the written and practical parts of the Final M.B.B.S Examination.

    A Candidate has appeared or has yet to appear for the M.B.B.S Examination may also apply. Such candidates will be admitted to the examinations if otherwise eligible but the admission would be deemed to be provisional and subject to cancellation, if they do not produce proof of having passed the written and practical part of the final M.B.B.S Examination along with the detailed application which will be required to the submitted to the Commission by the candidates who qualify on the result of the written examination. Such proof of passing the requisite examination should have been issued latest by the closing date of Detailed Application Form of the Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE).

    Only valid proof of passing the qualifying examination viz. Degree Certificate / Final Marksheet / Provision Degree Certificate etc. as are normally issued to the candidates by the competent authority will be accepted.

    NOTE : A Candidate who has yet to complete the compulsory rotating internship is educationally eligible for admission to the examination but on selection he / she will be appointed only after he / she has completed the compulsory rotating internship.

    Physical and Medical Standards:

    Candidates must be physically and medically fit according to the physical / medical standards for the Combined Medical Services Examination, 2025.

  3. Age limit:

    • A candidate for this examination must not have attained the age of 32 years as on August 1, 2025, i.e. the candidate must have been born not earlier than August 2, 1993. However, for Medical Officers Grade in General Duty Medical Officers Sub-cadre of Central Health Services, the upper age limit must not exceed 35 (thirty-five years) as on 01 August, 2025.
    • The upper age limit is Relaxable;
    • Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to an Schedule Caste or a Schedule Tribe.
    • Upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.
    • Upto a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof;
    • Upto a maximum of five years in the case of Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on August 1, 2025, and have been released (i) on completion of assignment (including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year from 1st August, 2025) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency, or (II) on acount of physical disability attributable to Military Service or (iii) on invalidment.
    • Upto a maximum of five years in the case of ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of 5 years Military Service as on August 1, 2025, and whose assignment has been extended beyond 5 years and in whose case the Ministry of Defence issues a certificate that they can apply for civil employment and that they will be released on 3 months’ notice on selection from the date of receipt of offer of appointment;
    • Upto a maximum of ten years in the case of (a) blindness and low vision, (b) deaf and hard of hearing, (c) austim, intellectual disability, specific learning disability and mental illness (e) multiple disabilities from amongst person under clauses (a) to (d) of section 34 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 including deaf-blindness.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • The medical officer will be recruited and posted in any central department
  • The medical officer is supposed to do medical duties as performed by any doctor
  • Indian Govt. can send the officer to any department to serve its employees, retired employees and their dependents
  • The medical officer is responsible for allotting duties to the medical staff and makes the sure smooth running of OPD as well
  • The medical officer makes arrangements to distribute work at the time of emergency. The officer manages his staff in normal OPD hours and is allowed to organize laboratory services
  • The medical officer should be within 8 KM radius only as the medical officer's help may be required any time. The medical officer will get all the benefits as other central government employees get when it comes to accommodations, bonus, salary and other things

UPSC Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE) Test Centres 

The UPSC will conduct the computer-based examination for CMS at 41 test centres spread across the country.

The centres and the dates of holding the examination as mentioned above are liable to be changed at the discretion of the Commission. Applicants should note that there will be a ceiling on the number of candidates allotted to each of the centres except Chennai, Delhi, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur. Allotment of Centres will be on the first-apply-first-allot basis and once the capacity of a particular centre is attained, the same will be frozen. Applicants, who cannot get a centre of their choice due to ceiling, will be required to choose a Centre from the remaining ones. Applicants are, thus, advised that they may apply early so that they could get a Centre of their choice.

NOTE :

"Notwithstanding the aforesaid provision, Commission, reserve the right to change the Centres at their discretion if the situation demands".

UPSC Combined Medical Service 2025 Notification will be released

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will release the Combined Medical Service (CMS) 2025 Notification on 19 February, 2025 along with the application form. Candidates can start the registration from CMS 2025 from 19 February to 11 March, 2025 on the official website - upsc.gov.in. UPSC CMS 2025 exam will be conducted on 20 July, 2025.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has annonced the Combined Medical Services Examination (CMSE), Results 2024 on 30 July, 2024. The UPSC CMS Exam was held on 14th July, 2024. Candidates who have qualified for the Interview / Personality Test has been published on the official website - upsc.gov.in by UPSC.

UPSC CMS Admit Card 2024 is out

The Union Public Service Commission has released the Combined Medical Service (CMS) 2024 Admit Card on 05 July, 2024. Candidates who are registered can download their admit card on the official website - upsc.gov.in using their registration number and captcha. The UPSC CMS Exam is scheduled on 14 July, 2024.

UPSC - CMS Notification 2023 has been released

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the Notification 2023 for Combined Medical Service (CMS) Examination on 19 April 2023. The aspirants who are interested in applying for the CMS are supposed to visit the official website of the Commission; upsc.gov.in.
 
Candidates will be able to fill out the application form online from 19 April, 2023 to 09 May 2023. The UPSC will conduct the examination for CMS from 16 July, 2023.

UPSC CMS Result 2022 declared on the official website.

Union Public Service Commission (IPSC) has announced the Combined Medical Service (CMS) Result 2022 on 08 August, 2022.

Candidates can check the UPSC CMS Result through the official website at upsc.gov.in. UPSC CMS 2022 Exam was held in July to fill more than 650 Vacant posts.

Candidates who have cleared the UPSC CMS are now eligible for an interview/personality test.
