Indian Defence Accounts Service Exam

What is IDAS Exam?

The Indian Defence Accounts Service [IDAS] is a Group "A" Gazetted Central Civil Service of the Government of India. It is the oldest department under the Government of India.

The cadre controlling authority is the Ministry of Defense.

The IDAS officers are responsible for maintaining the complete accounts of the Defence Services.

The officers of the Indian Defence Accounts Service manage the biggest budget allocation in the govt of India, i.e., the budget of the defense forces.

UPSC Civil Services Prelims 2025 Exam Date

Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) has released the notification for Civil Services Examination (CSE) Preliminary 2025 on 22 January, 2025. Candidates who are interested and eligible can start submitting the application form from 22 January, 2025 and the last date to submit the applicattion form is on 11 February, 2025. Candidates who qualify the Preliminary Examination will be eligible to appear for the Civil Services (Main) Examination, which is scheduled to commence on 22, 23, 24, 30 & 31 August, 2025 Onwards (5 Days).

UPSC Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS) 2025 Mains exam will be conducted in a Pen and Paper-Based Test mode on 22, 23, 24, 30 & 31 August, 2025. As per the UPSC IDAS Exam Schedule 2025, the Civil Services Exam will be held in two sessions every day. UPSC CSE Forenoon (Morning) Session will be conducted from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon and the Afternoon 2nd Session will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Nationality:

    Nationality of a candidate must be either of the following:

    • Citizen of India
    • Subject of Nepal
    • Subject of Bhutan
    • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962 for permanent settlement in India.
    • Migrant from any of the following countries for permanently settling in India:
    1. Pakistan
    2. Burma
    3. Sri Lanka
    4. East African countries of Kenya
    5. Uganda
    6. the United Republic of Tanzania
    7. Zambia
    8. Malawi
    9. Zaire
    10. Ethiopia
    11. Vietnam
  2. Education qualification:

    A candidate must hold a degree from any of the recognised universities or possess an equivalent qualification.

    Candidate applying for civil service exams is required to fulfill the following criteria:

    • Candidate must hold a Bachelor's Degree from any of the recognized universities
    • Candidates who have appeared for the qualifying examination and are awaiting results or those who are yet to appear for the qualifying examination are also eligible for the Preliminary Examination. Such candidates have to produce proof of passing the said examination along with the application for the Main Examination
    • Candidates with professional and technical qualifications recognized by the Government or its equivalent are also eligible to apply
    • Candidates who have passed the final year of MBBS or any Medical Examination but are yet to complete the internship can also appear for the Main Examination. However, they must submit a certificate from the concerned University that they have passed the final professional medical examination
  3. Age limit:

    Candidate should have attained the minimum age 21 years and maximum age 30 years as on 1st of August in the year of examination.

    Relaxable age limit is as follows:

    • Upto maximum of 5 years for Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) candidates.
    • Upto maximum of 3 years for Other Backward Candidates (OBC)
    • Upto maximum of 5 years for a candidate from the State of Jammu & Kashmir
    • Upto maximum of 5 years for Defence Services personnel
    • Upto maximum of 5 years for Ex-servicemen including Commissioned officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least 5 years Military Service and have been released.
    • Upto maximum of 5 years for ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of 5 years of Military Service.
    • Upto maximum of 10 years for Blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped persons
  4. Number of atempts:

    The number of attempts restriction is mentioned below:

    • General Category Candidates: 6 attempts
    • SC/ST Candidates: No Limits
    • OBC Candidates: 9 attempts
    • Physically handicapped- 9 attempts for general and OBC, while unlimited for SC/ST

Roles and Responsibilities

To provide financial advice, payment, and internal auditing and accounting functions for the Army, Air Force, Navy, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ordnance Factories, Canteen Stores Department, Border Road Organisation and other allied organisations.
