Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service Exam

What is IES/ISS Exam?

The Indian Economic Service along with Indian Statistical Service is the administrative inter-ministerial civil service under Group A of the Central Civil Services of the executive branch of the Government of India.

The Indian Economic Service was introduced for formulating and implementing economic policies and programmes in India. With the initiation of large-scale economic reforms in 1991 and the proliferation of the regulatory role of the government, such analysis and advice within the domain of the service have increased manifold. For Indian Statistical Service, all statistical posts of different ministries and departments were pooled together in the initial constitution of service.

A combined competitive examination for recruitment to Junior Time Scale of the Services will be held by the Union Public Service Commission in accordance with the rules published by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation in the Gazette of India.

IES/ ISS Notification 2025

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will has released the Notification for Indian Economic Service (IES) & Indian Statistical Service (ISS) 2025 on 12 February, 2025. Candidates who are interested and eligible can apply for the IES / ISS 2025 on the official website of UPSC - upsc.gov.in. Candidates can start submitting the application form from 12 February, 2025 to 04 March, 2025 till 6:00 PM. The UPSC IES / ISS 2025 Exam will be conducted from 20 to 22 June, 2025. Aspirants are expected to keep a track of the official website of the Commission for the latest update and news, related to the exam.

UPSC has released the notification for the Indian Economic Service (IES) / Indian Statistical Service (ISS) on 12 February, 2025.

Candidates can apply online between 12 February to 04 March, 2025 The written examination will be held from June 20 to June 22, 2025 (3 Days).

IES/ ISS Number of Vacancies

Services to which recruitment is to be made on the results of this exam and the approx number of vacancies in Junior Scale of the Services are given below:

(i) Indian Economic Service  - 12 Vacancies (approx)

(ii) Indian Statistical Service - 35 Vacancies (approx)

NOTE;

In Indian Statistical Service, out of 35 vacancies, 04 (three) vacancies (including 03 (three) backlog vacancy) are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities out of which 01 (One) backlog vacancy has been reserved for Specific Learning Disability / Multiple Disability (SLD / MD), 01 (one) backlog vacancy has been reserved for Blindness / Low Vision (B/LV) and 01 (One) backlog vacancy has been reserved for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) (which can be interchanged in terms of DoP&T's OM dated 15.01.2018]; 01 (One) fresh vacancy has been reserved for Locomoter Disability (LD) and this vacancy is not to be interchanged as per DoP&T's OM dated 15.01.2018).

 

In Indian Economic Service, out of 12 vacancies, 01 (One) vacancy is reserved for Person with Benchmark Disabilities in the Blindness and Low Vision (B/LV) category.


Eligibility Criteria

  1. Nationality:

    A candidate must be either:

    (a) a Citizen of India, or
    (b) a subject of Nepal, or
    (c) a subject of Bhutan, or
    (d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
    (e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

    Note:

    • Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India
    • A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.
  2. Education qualification:

    1. For Indian Economic Service (IES):

    A candidate for the Indian Economic Service must have obtained a Post-Graduate Degree in Economics / Applied Economics / Business Economics / Econometrics from a University incorporated by of an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutes established by an Act Parliament or declared to be deemed as University under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956  or a Foreign University approved by the Central Government from time to time.

    2. For Indian Statistical Service (ISS):

    A Candidate for the Indian Statistical Service must have obtained a Bachelor's Degree with Statistics / Mathematical Statistics / Applied Statistics as one of the subject or a Master's degree in Statistics / Mathematical Statistics / Applied Statistics from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutes established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as University Under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 or a Foreign University approved by the Central Government from time to time.

  3. Age limit:

    The candidates must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years as on August 1, 2025, i.e. he/she must have been born not earlier than August 2, 1995, and not later than August 1, 2004.

    The upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxable as mentioned for the below categories:

    (i) Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belong to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe;

    (ii) Upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidate belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC) who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.

    (iii) Upto a maximum of three years in the case Defence Services Personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area, and released as a consequence thereof;

    (iv) Upto a maximum of five years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs / SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 01st August, 2025.

    (v) Upto a maximum of five years in the case of ECos / SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of five years of Military Service as on 01st August, 2025 and whose assignment has been extended beyond five years and in whose case the Ministry of Defence issues a certificate that they can apply for Civil employment and that they will be released on the three months' notice on selection from the date of receipt of offer of appointment.

    (vi) Upto a maximum of 10 years in the case of Persons with Benchmark Disabilities viz;

    (a) Blindness and low vision;

    (b) Deaf and Hard of Hearing;

    (c) Locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy;

    (d) Austim, intellectual disability, specific learning ability and mental illness;

    (e) Multiple disabilities from amongst person under clauses (a) to (d) including deaf blindness.

Roles and Responsibilities

IES is the gateway to the central service as Group A officers. Aspirants who successfully pass IES/ISS examination are placed in various cadre posts in the planning commission, planning board, ministry of economic affairs, national sample survey and other allied offices where specialists in economics and statistics are required. 

The posts are primarily located in Ministries/ Departments dealing with economic and social sectors. Besides Cadre posts, IES officers go on deputation to serve in various domestic and international organizations such as UN bodies, foreign governments, state governments and regulatory bodies. Officers from the service are also appointed on deputation to posts in the Central Ministries/ Departments under the Central Staffing Scheme. 

The places of posting are usually in the State capitals or New Delhi. A candidate selected at a favorable age can expect to rise quite high in the career and touch the level of even Secretary to the Government of India, in any Ministry concerned with economic affairs.

UPSC IES / ISS Result 2024 declared

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has declared the results of Indian Economic Service (IES) & Indian Statistical Service (ISS) exams for 2024. Candidates who have appeared for the exam can check & visit the official website of UPSC - upsc.gov.in to download their results. Candidates who are qualified in the examination are eligible for the Interview / Personality Test.

UPSC - IES / ISS Notification released

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the Notification 2024 for the Indian Economic Service (IES)/ Indian Statistical Service (ISS) on 10 April 2024. The aspirants who are interested in applying for the IES /ISS are supposed to visit the official website of the Commission; upsc.gov.in. Candidates will be able to fill out the application form online from 10 April, 2024 to April 2024. The UPSC will conduct the examination for IES/ISS from June 21 to 23, 2024.

UPSC - IES / ISS Notification 2023 has been released

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the Notification 2023 for the Indian Economic Service (IES)/ Indian Statistical Service (ISS) on 19 April 2023. The aspirants who are interested in applying for the IES /ISS are supposed to visit the official website of the Commission; upsc.gov.in.
 
Candidates will be able to fill out the application form online from 19 April, 2023 to 09 May 2023. The UPSC will conduct the examination for IES/ISS from June 23 to 25, 2023.

UPSC IES/ISS Detailed Application Form 2021 Released

The UPSC has activated the Detailed Application Form 2021 link for Indian Economic Service (IES) and Indian Statistical Service (ISS) exam. Candidates can fill the DAF between September 15 and 28, 2021.

IES & ISS Result 2021 Declared

The UPSC has released the Indian Economic Service (IES)/ Indian Statistical Service (ISS) written exam result 2021. Candidates need to check their result using the roll number. A total of 32 candidates were shortlisted for the IES exam. A total of 24 candidates were shortlisted for the ISS exam. 

The notice reads, "No request for change in the date and time of Personality Test intimated to the candidates will ordinarily be entertained under any circumstances."
