What is IBPS IRS Exam?
Indian Revenue Service (IRS) is a Civil Services Competitive Exam in India conducted by UPSC for recruitment to Revenue Department. The Indian Revenue Service (IRS), is the Administrative Revenue Service of the Government of India. It is one of the 'Group-A' services.
IRS is a Central Civil Service that functions under the Department of Revenue in the Union Ministry of Finance and is concerned with the collection and management of the various direct and indirect taxes, accruing the same to the Union Government.
IRS comprises two branches:
- IRS (Income Tax)
- IRS (Customs and Central Excise).
The work culture and work profile
- Mainly attached to the Income Tax and Customs Departments but are also deputed to many other agencies and departments
- Advising on tax policy matters by playing a significant role in framing or amending of statutes and frames regulations in relation to taxes

- Newly created Directorate of Criminal Investigation under the Central Board of Direct Taxes collects and coordinates the intelligence gathering actions of the department and prosecutes tax offenders.
UPSC Civil Services Prelims 2025 Exam Date
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the notification for Civil Service Examination (CSE) Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Preliminary Exam on 22 January, 2025. Candidates who are interested can submit the application form from 22 January, 2025 and the last is on 11 February, 2025. The UPSC IRS Preliminary Exam will be held on 25 May, 2025 and the IRS Main Exam will be conducted from 22, 23, 24, 30 & 31 August, 2025 Onwards (5 Days) as Pen and Paper-Based Test Mode.
The IRS 2025 exam will be held in two session every day. The UPSC IRS Forenoon (Morning) Session will be conducted from 9"00 AM to 12:00 PM and the 2nd Session (Afternoon) will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
