Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2025 Notification on 04 September, 2024. UPSC CGSE Perliminary Exam will be conducted on 09 February, 2025 and UPSC CGSE Mains Exam will be held on 21st & 22nd June, 2025.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the scheme, pattern and syllabus for the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination for 2025. The Commission has also changed the exam name from ''Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination (CGGE)'' to ''Combined Geo-Scientist Examination (CGSE)".
The UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination consists of three stages. Candidates have to attend preliminary as well as mains examination for the final interview selection. Canddiates who are qualified in the preliminary exam will be shortlised for the mains and then for the final exam.
Candidates who are aiming for the CGSE examination can check the revised exam pattern for both Preliminary and Mains below.
The examination shall be conducted accoording to the following plan:
1. Stage - I: Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination consists of Objective questions for the selection of candidates for the Stage - II.
2. Stage - II: Combined Geo-Sceintist (Main) Examination shall be a Descriptive Type Paper.
3. Stage - III: Personality Test / Interview.
UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist 2025 Preliminary Exam is a computer-based online exam and CBT Test. The Combined Geo-Scientist Examination (Preliminary) comprises of two papers. The General Studies paper is common to all the streams.

Combined Geo-Scientist Examination: Personality Test
Interview/ Personality Test of such candidates as may be called by the Commission, carrying a maximum of 200 marks.
The candidate will be interviewed by a Board of competent and unbiased observers who will have before them a record of their career. The object of the interview is to assess their suitability for the posts for which they have competed. Special attention will be paid in the Personality Test to assessing the candidate’s capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application, the integrity of character and aptitude for adapting themselves to the field life.
Document Verification: Verification of eligibility conditions with reference to original documents is taken up only after the candidate is qualified for Interview/ Personality Test.
(a) Candidates completing for selection to the posts of Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist and Scientist 'B' (Hydrogeology), Scientist 'B' (Chemical) and Scientist 'B' (Geophysics) will be required to appear in all the subject mentioned against respective category above.
(b) If any candidates failed to appear in any one or more of the above papers, meant for Stage-II/ Main Examination for selection to the posts of Geologist, Geophysicist and Chemist and Scientist 'B' (Hydrogeology), Scientist 'B' (Chemical) and Scientist 'B' (Geophysics), their candidature shall stand rejected and part of the Main Examination attempted by him / her shall not be evaluated and counted by any purpose.
(c) Credits will be given for orderly effective and exact expression combined with due economy of words in all subjects of Examination.
(d) Candidates should use only international form of Indian numerals (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc) While answering question papers.
(e) Candidates will be allowed the use of Non-programmable type Pocket Calculators in Descriptive / Conventional Type Papers of the Examination. Programmable type calculators will not be allowed and the use of such calculators shall tantamount to resorting to unfair means by the candidates.
Loaning or interchanging of calculators in the Examination Hall is not permitted.
(f) Candidates should not that if any irrelevant matters / signages / marks etc. are found written in the answer scripts, which would not be related to any question / answer and / or would be having the potential to disclose the candidate's identify, the Commission will impose a penalty of deduction of marks from the total otherwise accruing to the candidate or will not be evaluate the said scripts on this account.
