Things to know before choosing an internship

Internship is the first step in helping you determine how you want to build your career. These days, almost all students prefer to utilize their semester breaks valuably and join internships which will be helpful for them to get some hands-on experience and tell them what to expect when they join the job industry. Employers, too, would rather hire graduates who have had some experience in the corporate world. So what all should you keep in mind while choosing an internship?

Choosing the company: Should you choose an MNC or a small company? Most students prefer to do internships in the top organizations of the country, because having that in your resume will undoubtedly make it more impressive. But the benefit of choosing a smaller company is that, in such companies, there aren't specific roles for each employee. Being part of such an environment exposes you to a vast number of roles and operations involved in the working of a company. Looking at it from a broader, futuristic perspective, this would be beneficial for you.

Field of internship: While it certainly makes sense to choose your field of internship to coincide with your field of study, it is not entirely necessary to do so. You may or may not pursue a career in the field you graduate in, since you may be passionate about something else. Internship is an opportunity to pursue that passion. This would help you gain focus and would put things in perspective. It may help you realize where you want to work and what you want to do.

How would the internship help: You have to choose an internship that aids in enhancing your skill-set so that it may be useful for you while searching for a job after college. Verify the role and the responsibilities you will hold. Find out who you will report to. Try to talk to students who have interned for that a particular position before, for some valuable feedback.

Do your research: Talk to members of your college alumni and your professors. Do an in-depth research. If possible, try to speak to a few working professionals who are currently doing a job that you may be interested in. Ask them about the ups and downs of their job and if they would recommend it to a fresher.

Unpaid or paid: Some companies pay a stipend to their interns, but a lot of companies offer unpaid internship opportunities. If you are interning in a different city, make a note of the travel, housing and food expenses and see if it is affordable for you. Paid positions maybe more motivating than unpaid ones. However, unpaid internships can be undertaken if the position and the work scenario is challenging and engaging enough to boost your career in the future.

Keeping these points in mind will help you select the best company for you to intern. All internships, regardless of the type of experience it is, adds to your learning curve. It may even help you realize that what you thought was your dream job isn't nearly as fun as you thought it might be. This would definitely help in choosing the right career path after your education.
