Bihar Students Owe Their Success To CIMP Training

Belling the CAT: The SGC Way!
New Delhi/Patna, Oct 18: Surmounting heavy odds stacked up against them, students from the reserved categories in Bihar are developing a knack of getting into the top rung IIMs, and they owe their life-changing experience to a unique institution -- Students' Guidance Centre (SGC).

A pioneering initiative of Chandragupt Institute of Management Patna (CIMP), a management institute of national repute, SGC provides free coaching to bright students from the SC/ST/OBC categories for cracking CAT and other management entrance tests.

A brainchild of CIMP director Prof. V Mukunda Das, SGC focuses on the accelerated development of Bihar by providing educational access to poor but bright students of the state, aspiring for admission in IIMs and other national institutes of management. Apart from CAT, students also get training for competitions like bank probationary officer SSC and other competitive examinations.

"Bihar has ‘Super 30' which coaches poor students for IITs with incredible results. We have set up SGC, which coaches deprived students for IIMs and other top management institutes," said Prof. Das.

"While Anand Kumar's Super 30 is a batch of 30 students, SGC selects 75 students every year -- 50 from the SC/ST category and 25 from OBCs," pointed out the CIMP director, a renowned expert on rural marketing who was part of the faculty at IIM Kozhikode and IRMA (Institute of Rural Management Anand).

SGC aims to be a catalyst in bringing about a radical change in the educational profile of Bihar by developing the competencies among the socially and economically backward students, he said.

The students are selected on the basis of a written test and interview. Once selected, they are provided free coaching for six months for entrance tests, counselling and personality development to enable them to compete in tests like CAT, GMAT, XAT and IRMA.

Selected students also get scholarship of Rs 1000 per month, besides all the learning aids, such as online and offline tests, personality improvement, extempore practice and English communication sessions. Hostel facility is available to students of rural areas who have no residence in Patna.

"This project has been formulated to showcase Bihar as an outstanding state in educational reforms in the country," Prof. Das said, adding: "Though SGC is an initiative of CIMP, it is supported by the state welfare department in its mission."
