National Statistics Day: Theme, History And Introduction Of Father of Indian Statistics P C Mahalanobis
The Government of India has designated June 29 as the National Statistics Day in the memory of late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. Every year June 29 is marked as the National Day of Statistics on the occasion of the birth anniversary of P. C. Mahalanobis as a tribute to his great contributions in the field of Statistics and economic planning.
To mark the occasion, the MoSPI along with Indian Statistical Institute will unveil a coin of Rs.125. The Coin will be unveiled by Hon'ble Vice President of India N Venkaiah Naidu in an event in Kolkata.

Every year, Statistics Day is celebrated with a theme of contemporary national importance. As data is crucial in forming developmental socio-economic policies, correct use of it ensures the development in a sustainable way so the theme of 2022 is decided accordingly.
National Statistics Day 2022
This year the National Day of Statistics 2022 is to be celebrated on virtual-cum-online mode. In the event the Chief Guests Rao Indrajit Singh, Minister of State of Ministry of Statistics And Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Prof Bimal Kumar Roy, Chairman of National Statistical Commission and Dr G.P. Sharma Chief Statistician of India & Secretary MoSPI shall address the participants. Also the names of winners of Prof P.C. Mahalanobis National Award in Official Statistics, 2022 and Prof P.V. Sukhatme National Award for lifetime contribution in the field of statistics, 2022 will be announced during the event.
History of National Statistics Day
The day was first observed in 2007 after the notification regarding the same was published in the Gazette of India on June 5, 2007. This is one of the special days celebrated in India to draw the attention of Youths to be inspired by the great works of Prof P C Mahalanobis, the great scientist and Statistician.
The Day is celebrated by organising various seminars, discussions and competitions to highlight the importance of Statistics in National Development.
Who Was Professor P C Mahalanobis?
Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis who is considered as the father of Modern Statistics in India was born on June 29, 1893 in Kolkata. The founder of Indian Statistical Institute is remembered for giving a statistical measure known as Mahalanobis Distance. The ISI for higher education and research is recognized as the institute of national importance by the 1959 act of Indian Parliament. Here we are listing some important facts and information about the Father of Indian Statistics.
- In 1930 he proposed the Mahalanobis distance for the first time. It is widely used in the field of cluster analysis and classification.
- In 1932, he founded the first statistical institute of its kind; the ISI which was later declared as the institute of National Importance in 1959.
- The first Indian Journal on Statistics : Sankhya was launched in 1933.
- In 1950 the National Sample Survey was established and a central statistical organisation was set up to conduct statistical activities in a more comprehensive way.
- In 1955 he became the Member of Planning Commissions and played a significant role in formulation of the 2nd 5 year plan of 1956- 1961. The Second Five Year plan was based on Mahalanobis Model which paved the way for Industrialisation in India.
- In 1968 he was honoured with India's Second Civilian Award; Padma Vibhushan for his notable contributions in the field of Statistical Science and Economics.
- He was instrumental in introducing a method for estimating crop yields which involved statisticians sampling in the fields by cutting crops in a circle of diameter 4 feet.
- His most important contributions are related to large-scale sample surveys. He introduced the concept of pilot surveys and advocated the usefulness of sampling methods.
- Prof P C Mahalanobis was also honoured by the Highest civilian award of Britain: the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and also he was the fellow of Royal Society London.
- He was one of the friends of the world famous Indian Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan and also served as the secretary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.
