Is It Better to Study History Than Economics?

The topic may put you in a quandary. What is better to study? History or Economics? Before we get into judgment, let us first understand, what each subject means...

What is history?
In simple terms, it is a collection of past events on which the current world is progressing.

What is economics?
It deals with the analysis of production, consumption, distribution of goods.

So, now comes the moment to decide which to pick? They both seem to be important. But, by studying which of these would one gain the benefit?

Why we need to study history?
We get more than what we can think of, out of "history". It forms the pillar on which the present day stands. All of the inventions, culture, heritage, developments etc of a country depends on its past. Does the East India Company mean anything to you? Does the divide and rule policy mean something? All the wars ever fought had any significance? What was the outcome?

When we start answering these questions, we begin to respect our freedom fighters, we realise what it means to be independent, we see the reasons why the conflicts arose, we also get to know that a lot of discoveries and inventions were made during the wars. History is not just about wars but its also about various other significant events that have occurred which has helped in shaping up a country. Hence, it becomes obvious that students must study history, not just limited to their nation, but of the world as well. Only then can one claim that we learn from the past.

Why we need to study economics?
What do we gain by studying economics? Like how the country's present depends on its past events, a country's present also depends on economics. How would we know how much food crops of a particular kind needs to be grown? What are the goods that can be exported? What goods must be imported? Is the wealth in the country enough to sustain in the ever competing world? How does one know all this? It is by studying economics. Only then can we understand how to maintain a nation's wealth.

Hence, we can clearly see that each one is significant in its own terms. What one wants to study should be based on one's interests. Both the subjects offer you significant knowledge about the country's present status. On a personal note however, economics gives more insight into the current trends of a nation. So, we can say that it isn't really better to study history than economics. Knowing a decent amount about historic events and concentrating on the trending deeds can help you be aware of the current mode.
