The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has kick-started the selection process of the year-long Civil Services Examination (CSE) with Preliminary round. The Civil Services Prelims exam held on June 2, 2019. Over 10 lakh candidates have appeared for the Civil Services Preliminary examination in 2019. The Commission has not yet revealed the attendance percentage. Comparing to previous trends, the attendance percentage will be around fifty per cent.

This offline written exam consists of two papers namely, General Studies and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The examination conducted across the country at various test centres in two shifts. It is to be noted that the merit list will be prepared based on the score obtained in the General Studies (paper-I). The CSAT (paper-II) is only of qualifying paper and one should obtain 33% marks.

UPSC Civil Services Exam Analysis 2019: Paper-I

The General Studies (Paper-I) held in the morning shift. The question paper surprised the aspirants with more than 45 questions from current affairs, which are related to subjects such as Ease of Doing Business Index and agreements between India and The European Union. There were some questions on the money multiplier and the poverty line. The conceptual questions are high comparing to previous year trends. The number of environment based questions also increased. Overall, it is rated as above moderate.

UPSC Civil Services Exam Analysis 2019: Topics-wise Questions
  • History - Almost all the questions were asked from Medieval and Modern India. Some of the questions in Modern India are from the Swadeshi Movement and Charter Act of 1813.
  • Geography - The questions were asked on crop production, summer solstice June 21 and glacier.
  • Environment - Biosphere reserve, endangered species, Ramsar Convention, pollution, etc.
  • Economy - Ease of doing business, purchasing power parity, AIIB, Union Budget, etc.
  • Indian Polity - Article 142, the office of profit, Governor, fifth and ninth schedule, etc.
  • Science Technology - LTE & VOLTE, digital signature, RNA interface technology, etc.
  • Current Affairs - Around three questions were asked regarding international relations. Some questions on agreements and trending topics.

UPSC Civil Services Exam Analysis 2019: Paper-II

The UPSC Paper-II (CSAT) 2019 rolled out with some changes in the pattern of the verbal sections. There is no change in the quantitative and reasoning sections. As expected, the passages continue to dominate the CSAT paper. Aspirants who are good at question selection strategies will get good marks. There were no questions on data interpretation. There are a few questions on visual reasoning.

UPSC Civil Services Exam Analysis 2019: Cutoff

After analysing the question paper and considering the reactions of aspirants, experts believe that the cut-off score for the candidates belonging to the general category will be more than 108. The cut-off score for OBC will stand at 100-107. The cut-off score for SC/ST categories is 90-97.

UPSC Civil Services Exam Analysis 2019: Aspirants Reactions

Aspirants who put all the hardship for the Civil Services Preliminary took the exam on June 2. A few aspirants surprised with the question paper, which is tougher compared to the previous year. Though there is a mixed reaction from aspirant, many said that the difficulty of the question paper is moderate. While the aspirants who took the exam for the first time expressed the question paper is tough. The difficulty level of Paper-II, i.e., CSAT also increased compared to the previous year.

The UPSC is expected to release the Civil Services Preliminary exam results 2019  in the month of July. Candidates who qualify and obtain the cut-off score will be called for the UPSC Main examination  which will be held in September for five days.
