In such a situation, people often reach out to your past supervisors, managers and colleagues in order to know how efficient you are at your work. This gives them an opportunity to gauge your potential even before hiring you. This is done through the references that you list in your resume.

With the Internet becoming more and more popular and professional networking sites like LinkedIn gaining popularity by the minute, access to people whom you have mentioned as references has become easy. All of this works together to emphasise the importance of a reference.

He or she might not be higher to you in rank or designation, but they will definitely be in a position to validate the qualities of teamwork that is innate in you. These people are also in a position to speak about your interpersonal skills.

• Teacher

One of the most respected professions in the world, the words of a teacher are highly valued. That is why getting references from your teachers and professors will earn you brownie points. It is a good idea to get references from a teacher who taught you a subject that is relevant to the job profile you are applying for.

They will be in a position to speak about your technical capabilities, the skills that you picked up during the course as well as your personal character.

• Former Employer

As smart as you may think yourself to be, the fact remains that usually, your employer is smarter than you and nothing is hidden from them. Your prospective new employer is well aware of this and will definitely like the idea of having a word with them before employing you.

Thus, being on good terms with your employer while quitting the job is a good idea as this leaves you with the opportunity to mention their credentials in your resume. Doing so will increase your chances of getting hired by leaps and bounds.

Go for seeking a reference from an academic advisor only if you have spent a considerable amount of time with them in your college premises. In case you did spend enough time, this person will be able to talk about how you have evolved as an individual.

They will be able to trace your professional journey right from the very beginning to where you stand at the moment. Academic advisors are people who never let you down and hence, it is a good idea to seek references from them.

• Former Employee

The people whose references you list need not always be superior to you in age or designation. People who have worked under you know certain aspects of your professional characteristics which your supervisors or peers will not be wary of.

That is why prospective employees consider the opinion of such people in high regard. Someone who has worked under you will be able to talk about your management skills and your flair at team building.
