Ideas for engaging students in a classroom

Being 'unique and creative' is the trump that the present era of young geniuses insist on. Equal importance should be given to creativity as much as for academics in any educational set up. Students love doing something new and creating something unique, if given an opportunity. Although inquisitiveness is a part of their learning curve, it becomes essential for teachers to engage them in activities outside the regular teaching schedule. So, as teachers, it is your responsibility to make way for a mix of creativity and fun along with academic curriculum.

Few ideas to get creative in engaging students and to have fun alongside academics are:

Music Treat!

If you are musically inclined, then this one is worth the try. Discover music from different cultures, ranging from south to north and from east to west. There are plenty of instruments from small to big sizes, that you can introduce the students to. For instance, creating a fusion with Indian Carnatic, Hindustani music with a western touch; would be a great delight to listen to. Give them hints about many different types of sounds and music generated by past masters, with their ever-green melodies.

Celebrate Food!

Oh my, how many delicacies can one really imagine in the world?! There are tens of thousands of dishes from all over the world to try out! Teach your students about the origin of certain food items and their benefits on health. There are many sweets and mildly spiced up dishes specially made for children. Invite your students to find out traditional Indian dishes and have each student choose a dish he or she can prepare and get it to the class and share it during the 'celebrate food' time. Have fun.

Special Study On Legends!

Have each student research and prepare about any one of the inventors, whose incredible inventions we use in every day life. It could also include their significant contribution into different spheres of society like arts, literature, entertainment, media, automobiles, law, government, and technology. Discuss about their positive impact on the nation and community.

Creative Jam!

Motivate students to come up with their own creativities, inventions for a day. Allow them to use their own brains to do what they enjoy doing the most. It could be making wooden handy-crafts, paper-crafts; creating mini bikes or cars or ships or airplanes; painting or sketching. They could even come up with their own poems or short stories or creative one-liners and present it before the class. If they would like to enact or do a mono act, that would be an entertainment and comes with loads of fun.

Ensure to have the students to participate in everything you teach or share in the classroom. Free expression of self should be encouraged as much as possible. Creativity and uniqueness should be given utmost attention to and nurtured for the good of their future endeavours. Focus on asserting their views on things and help them understand their stance in society. Most importantly, enjoy your time.
