Because of the long and flexible working hours involved, this is one field that requires a lot of dedication. Other than that, if you want to build a successful career in this field you need to build a specific skill set.

This is because, this is one field where one does not need much of a formal degree. A basic graduation degree in any discipline is more than enough to enter the realm of event management. However, if you wish to survive in the long run, you need to develop certain traits, and honestly speaking, it is never too early to start working on these skills.

This article speaks about the qualities you need to inculcate in yourself in order to make money in this field.

1. Public Relations

Irrespective of the size and magnitude of any event, you need to deal with a lot of people in order to organise anything. There will be clients, their agents, your service providers and a host of other people. In order to prepare yourself for this profession, the first and foremost thing that you must do is to try to gel well with people. It is equally important to understand the difference between public relations and networking. Public relations is all about maintaining cordial relationships.

2. Networking Skills

Acquiring networking skills is the next step in maintaining public relations. You never know who might be of use to you and when. The person who is able to figure out who will be able to help them with their different necessities is said to master the art of networking. Networking is important because at the end of the day, no matter how well chalked out a plan is, things can go wrong at any moment.

3. Creativity

We understand that creativity is innate and some people are just born with it. However, it is important to note that there are ways by which you can increase your creativity. One way to do that is to surround yourself with creative people.

Another possible way would be to read up or have a look at the work of other people. It is often seen that by noticing the creativity of other people, our creativity gets triggered and we develop ideas which would otherwise not be possible.

4. Marketing Skills

Today's world is all about selling yourself. As an event manager you will have to sell your ideas to the prospective clients. Now to be able to do this well you will have to have good marketing skills. One does not need to have a specific degree for this. This is a skill that can be harnessed over time.

5. Give Something New

Most event managers (or event management firms) offer their clients pretty much the same thing. If you really want to stand out in the crowd and make a lot of money, what you have to do is bring in something new to the market. If you can bring in something that is exceptionally good, there will be clients who will be ready to shell out any amount of money for the same.

6. Organisational Skills

The basic job of an event manager is to organise events (no matter how big or small the event is). The earlier you start to inculcate this in your life, the better it is for you. You can start off with this by taking charge of organising family functions.

7. Analytical Ability

As an event manager, it is practically impossible for you to be prepared for all sorts of issues that may arise. Thus, one of the primary skills that you will have to develop will be that of analytical ability. You must be able to tackle unforeseen hurdles with ease. For this you need a calm head and a knack for analytical problems. The earlier you start working on them, the better it will be for your personal growth.

8. Management Skills

As an event manager, you will have to manage a lot of human resources. This will include your clients, subordinates, business partners and third-party service providers or vendors. Apart from this, you will have to manage accounts, budgets risks and a wide array of situations. As an event manager you have to be prepared for all of it.

9. Make Proper Investments

This is one field where the financial gains are enormous. However, in order to reap the amount of profit that you dream of, you will have to make sufficient investments. Now the investments may be monetary or in terms of the effort that you put in. Do not expect to get the returns if you are not ready to toil hard and take risks.
