How Important Are Campus Facilities In The Educational Sector

By Shatavisha Chakravorty

Most of us might have heard of tales from our parents and grandparents about how they would travel for kilometers barefoot to go to schools. Often the school would be under a banyan tree or a room with thatched roofs. To them, having a toilet within accessible range was considered to be a luxury. Today, all of these things are of the past. Those luxuries have become a basic amenity and school or college campus facilities extend way beyond that.

While some people of the older generation might agree that all of this is a direct result of commercialization of education, the fact is that these campus facilities play a pivotal role in improving the work efficiency of both teachers and students. In such a situation, it will be wise on our part to analyze the role of the different campus amenities and discuss the part they play in building the bright future of the students

Campus Facilities In Educational Sector

· Acoustics and noise

Although it is not necessary for classrooms to be sound proof, excessive noise is seen to have a bad impact on the learning ability of students. In such a scenario it is important that educational institutions are set up far away from highways and main roads. As far as possible the architectural design of school buildings must be such that they minimize the external noise from entering the classroom.

· Library facilities

Gone are the days when library facilities were restricted to only books. Today, there is a digital section of any library and this amenity is necessary to facilitate learning as this is where the student's thirst for extra knowledge is catered to. If any educational institution is unable to provide the amenities to quench the same, the productivity of the students naturally comes down.

· Temperature control

Research has confirmed that the temperature in which a person works in affects his or her engagement levels which dictate their overall productivity. Thus, if you want to see the students and teachers perform to the best of their abilities, the first and foremost thing that needs to be done is to bring the room temperature to a value that is between 20 and 23 degree celsius.

· Gym facilities

This is a crucial facility in case of colleges and other institutes of higher learning. After a certain age, people tend to lose interest in games . In such a situation, the easiest way to maintain physical health and promote alertness of the mind would be to head to the gym. Most of the modern institutes are adopting this point and providing this facility as part of their campus infrastructure.

· Hostel facilities

In any institution of learning, the classroom is a place where there is diversity and students learn to respect the same . By having students from one town or area, this essential element of education is compromised with. In order to have a diversified student base it is important for educational institutions to have hostels that are of decent standards.

· Lighting

Educational institutions with a lot of natural lighting are seen to witness a reduction in the off topic behavior and increase the morale of the students. This results in a massive improvement in the mathematical abilities of the concerned students. Thus, it is important for schools to establish themselves in such a fashion that there is ample day light in all the classrooms.

· Mess and canteen facilities

A student can learn to the best of his or her abilities only when the body gets all the nutrition that it deserves. In such a situation, an institution cannot always expect its students to carry food in lunch boxes from home. Thus, having food mess and canteen that serve food that are compliant with that of basic hygiene and are nutritional in nature should be the responsibility of the authorities.

· Sports facilities

Irrespective of the level of education that is in question, a student cannot perform well if he or she is made to study the entire day. Engagement in sports activities will not only help to rejuvenate the body, but also prepares the mind to improve its concentration abilities.

· Air quality

Poor indoor air quality is one of the major causes of absenteeism in students suffering from respiratory diseases. This is a major hindrance to their concentration and learning abilities. In such a situation, the smartest thing for schools to do would be to install indoor air purifiers in their classrooms. This is all the way truer in case o schools that are situated in areas where the air quality is particularly poor.

· Swimming pool

While some people argue that this is a part of the sports facilities, this is far from being true. The fact is that a swimming pool is where many people go to merely relax themselves after a long day of academics. This particular activity helps in muscle building and keeps the body well toned. While some educational institutions prefer having separate swimming pools for males and females, others have a common pool.

Thus, having established the role of the various amenities in an educational institution's campus we now realize their importance in fostering learning. On that note, we urge educational institutions to ensure that all of these requirements are met and a healthy learning environment is achieved.
