The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced the Applied Mathematics as an academic elective at the Senior Secondary Level. The new academic elective will be available for students of Class 11 from the academic year (2020-21 session).

 

The new CBSE Class 11 Applied Mathematics elective will help students develop an understanding of basic mathematical and statistical tools and their applications in various fields. Students who have opted Basic Mathematics in Class 10 and passed with flying colours will be allowed to take the new academic elective in Class 11. CBSE Applied Mathematics

The CBSE has introduced the two levels of Mathematics - Basic and Standard for students at Class 10. The Basic is designed for students do not want to continue studying Maths after Class 10. However, the Standard is for those who want to continue with the subject after Class 10. The Board has introduced the Applied Mathematics in 2019-2020 session.

HRD Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has tweeted regarding the CBSE Class 11 Applied Mathematics. The minister said the new addition will help students' competency skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and logical reasoning.

He tweeted, "To help students develop an understanding of basic mathematical & statistical tools & their applications in various field, I have advised CBSE to introduce 'Applied Mathematics (241)' as an Academic Elective for class XI this academic year. "

The CBSE has released a circular regarding the introduction of Applied Mathematics (241) as an academic elective at Senior Secondary Level.

"Mathematics is widely used in higher studies in the field of Economics, Commerce, Social Sciences and many others. It has been observed that the existing syllabus of Mathematics aligns well with Science subjects, but does not align well with Commerce or Social Science-based subjects in university education. Keeping this in mind, one more elective course in Mathematics syllabus will be offered for Sr. Secondary classes with an aim to provide students relevant experience in Mathematics which can be used in the fields other than Physical Sciences," the press note reads.

It also reads, "Topics covered in two years shall aim to enable students to use mathematical knowledge in the field of business, economics and social sciences. It aims to promote appreciation of mathematical power and simplicity for its countless applications in diverse field. It is expected that the new subject of Applied Mathematics is taught by connecting concepts to the application in various fields, thereby enabling students to develop 21st century competencies such as critical thinking, problem-solving, logical reasoning, mathematical thinking, etc."
