This has led to a manifold increase in the number of career opportunities for the youth population. Amongst the myriad of career opportunities available, one of the most promising ones is that of air quality and control.

Career In Air Quality & Control Arena

This is because of the fact that the first step to tackling a malice like this would be to quantify the amount of damage that has been done. Only when we understand that will we be able to take appropriate measures to undo the same. This is precisely what an air quality and control analyst does. Read on to know more about air quality and control and the scope of pursuing this as a career.

• Air Quality And Control

In order to access the quality of the air that we breathe in, a number of air quality tests must be conducted. There are dedicated laboratories with a lot of advanced scientific machinery for this purpose. The results out of all of these tests are then analysed extensively. The idea of such a long and detailed analysis is to identify where the actual problem lies.

Once that is done, the next thing is to troubleshoot the problem and arrive at a feasible solution for the same. This entire process is the duty of the air quality and control technicians.

• Skills Required

Since the nature of job here might become a little monotonous after a couple of years, you must take special care to ensure that you have the required skill set before you actually plunge into the profession. You will be dealing with data on a daily basis. Thus, excellent data analysis skills are needed if you want to succeed in this field.

You will often have to act on your feet and for that a good understanding of the troubleshooting procedures is necessary. However, no matter how well trained you are, there will be times when you will encounter data that you have never dealt with before. In such a scenario, the only way to survive in this field would be if you have decent communication skills.

• Educational Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in science is an absolute necessity for pursuing a successful career in this field. A basic understanding of physical chemistry, air quality engineering, statistics and environmental management is needed. You must have attended labs that required you calibrate instruments and carry out measurements.

Those with a specialisation in weather-based sciences (like atmospheric chemistry, meteorology, instrumentation and management) during their undergraduate days are preferred. These courses may be carried out either as a part-time course or as a full-fledged 3-year degree.

• Training

Since this is a practical job, most workplaces prefer to train a fresher for a certain number of months, before deputing actual work to them. During this period the candidate is taught the usage of the instruments that are specific to the organisation.

It is always ensured that during the period of training the work of the new candidates is monitored and supervised by those with a greater amount of experience in that company. This holds true in the case of both freshers and experienced candidates joining a particular firm or organisation.

• Nature Of The Job

As is evident from the type of work that air quality and control technicians have to do, most of the jobs in this sector are government based. Thus, these type of jobs bring along their own share of social security. However, the quality of the air that we breathe is something that needs to be monitored day in and day out.

Thus, most of these jobs happen 24 X 7 and people are required to work in shifts. Chances are that you might not get fixed weekly offs and that you might have it on a rotational basis.

• Salary

In this line of work, the starting salary is not all that great. In the training period, a fresher makes 8 to 10 thousand per month. However, once the training period is over, there is a significant rise in the take-home salary with candidates making as much as 15 to 20 thousand per month. Over the years, with due promotions, the values rise higher.

It is important to note that other than the salary, there are a lot of perks and allowances (like night shift allowance, house rent allowance, medical allowance, etc.) that add on to the monetary compensation.

• Giving Back To The Society

Apart from the monetary compensation, the best thing about this job is the job satisfaction. In a way, you know that you are playing your role in undoing the damage to nature that has been caused as a result of generations of exploitation. There is also a high job satisfaction resulting from the independent nature of the experiments that you conduct.

Here, there is not much bossism or external influence and people are able to carry out your scientific experiments or data analysis in peace. The combined effect of these two parameters is the fact that people doing this type of work are found to be having a very high rating on the happiness index as issued by reputed global organisations.

Thus, if you are someone who values job satisfaction as much as the monetary compensation (if not more) then the job of an air quality and control analyst is something that you must definitely consider. This may well be your license to the future that you always wanted.
