In the past, the societal expectation was such that people were expected to fend for themselves and make a successful career by their 30s. However, these days, with the cost of living reaching an all-time high, there is greater pressure on the youth to earn a living. Thus, most people are expected to fend for themselves by their mid or late 20s. Another factor here is the fact that these days women are making highly progressive strides professionally. Their expanding competency has led to a major increase in the competition amongst all genders.

With such huge competition, recruiters are provided with a greater number of options with regards to selecting candidates. The situation becomes all the way graver if the candidates in question are freshers. This is because at the fresher level almost all the candidates have the same qualifications (and none of them have any experience at all).

However, this does not mean that companies just hire freshers randomly. They do look for specific personality traits and characteristics while recruiting freshers into their organisation. The recruiters take these traits to be symbolic of the true potential of the said candidate.

1. Flexibility

Today's world is such that the global business scene has a direct influence on the local market. In such a scenario, it is fair on our part to expect any organisation or firm to have its share of ups and downs. In such a scenario when it hires a fresher, it looks for someone who can keep up with the flexibility of the organisation.

Thus, candidates who are willing to relocate to different locations and work in 24x7 shifts are preferred over those who are not. Talking from a more technical perspective, freshers who are willing to invest their time and efforts in learning something new are preferred over candidates who have good grades but are not willing to learn new things.

This holds good not just in the world of technology but also that of commerce and business management. The expectation from freshers is that they should be able to shift gears and adapt to changes as and when the situation demands.

2. Communication Skills

While hiring a fresher, companies know that a certain amount of their time and effort will go into training the candidate to have the desired skill set to perform to the best of their abilities. At the same time, the company expects the fresher to have some prerequisite skill set. Amongst that, good communication skills are paramount.

Thus, while hiring freshers, companies gauge the candidates based on their fluency in English. The same is judged in all the mediums, viz., spoken communication, talking on the phone, body language, written communication and the ability to draft and respond to emails. Many companies have a specific round in the interview process where the communication skills of the fresher are tested.

It is important to note here that things like listening skills, ability to follow and respond to directions and provide appropriate feedback also fall under the jurisdiction of communication skills.

3. Honesty And Integrity

The skill set that is required for a particular job is something that can be taught to a person. However, the same cannot be said for personal values. That is why when a company hires an individual, it seeks for the quality of honesty in them. Technically speaking, the people hiring you will be well aware of the fact that everyone makes mistakes and that you are no different.

The way you react to things after realising that you have made a blunder is what makes the difference. In case you make a mistake in the interview process, do not hesitate to own up to it. Doing so will accentuate your integrity. If you try to cover up your mistake, you will only be pushing yourself into deeper trouble.

4. Punctuality And Determination

No one really enjoys going behind someone else and having to push them in order to get a job done. While hiring an employee, organisations expect that they should be able to carry out the task that is allotted to them in a worthy manner without being coaxed about the same. That is why organisations prefer freshers who are punctual and turn up to work on time.

Usually, these are the sort of people who stick to deadlines and are able to complete assignments within the allotted time frames. More often than not, companies take your punctuality as a symbol of your determination and zeal towards work and then judge you on the same. Thus, this particular trait can either give you a job or it can cost you the same.

5. Loyalty

When an organisation conducts a recruitment drive, a lot of time, effort and resources are invested in the same. Thus, it is obvious that the organisation would not want to go through that again and again. Hence, when it looks forward to hiring an employee, it looks for someone who will stay with the organisation for long. This is especially true in the case of hiring freshers.

Thus, it is very important for a candidate to prove their loyalty. Things like speaking against your school, college or home town are strictly discouraged. In case you have an experience of interning with a firm or organisation in your college days, make sure that you project them only in the positive light.

Remember, as a fresher the organisation expects you to bring along a new surge of hope and optimism and you should do everything that is possible in order to ensure that such a thing does happen.
