Poor performance? Blame the pile of homework!

By Anusha

If you ever thought that more the homework the child does, more smarter the child becomes? It is a popular misconception. Having a pile of homework to do can have an effect on the child, that is exactly opposite to what is expected!

The average scores related to the academic performance of the student against the amount of homework given by the end of the day equates to lower scores, as per a study conducted by a group of Australians. More the amount spent on doing the homework; lesser the score. This study suggests that making students do too much of homework can make them suffer depression.

The life balance goes out of proportion if a pupil is overburdened with homework. An 8-8-8 circadian rhythm must be adopted in life, by children and adults. This means that eight hours each for work, play and sleep plays a vital role in staying healthy.

To make things worse, teachers often give students time-consuming homeworks. This does nothing beyond keeping the students busy while being completely unproductive. An example could be, making the students write several pages from text book to their notebooks. This will never make a child a genius!

The homework monster!

It certainly does not mean that the whole concept of homework needs to be abolished! It only states that the the quality and amount of time the child spends on extra curricular activity after school must be considered as well. Finland adopted good quality homework practices, where children spent 30 minutes at night for homeworks and were free during the weekends. The result was that the children where stress free and they scored high.

Many parents too are now keeping a tab on how much time the child spends on homework each night. The last thing the parents want is their child being a victim to depression, stress and lower grades.
