Maharashtra MHT-CET Replaced With MT-CET From 2013

MHT-CET Replaced With MT-CET From 2013
The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) Maharashtra, every year conducted the Maharashtra Health Technology Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET), which was the common entrance test for the admissions to the engineering, pharmacy and health sciences courses across the state. MHTCET is replaced with MT-CET (Maharashtra Technology Common Entrance Test) from academic year 2013-14.

After the state government took a decision to participating in National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) conducted by Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi for admissions to medical and dental courses from the academic year 2013-14. MT-CET test will cover only engineering and pharmacy courses in the state.

M M Morve, additional secretary to state department of higher and technical education, recently issued a government resolution declaring that the state director of technical education will be the competent authority for the MT-CET 2013. Until now, the director of medical education & research was the competent authority for the MHT-CET. The DTE would later take over as the regulatory authority for the centralised admission process to engineering and pharmacy courses.

Initially, state government announced to join NEET from 2013. However, it decided against joining the single common entrance test JEE for engineering and technology courses.

Rajesh Tope, Minister for Higher and Technical Education said that the state was keen on joining the JEE from 2014-15, Joining the JEE from 2013-14 would have given very little time to students who are currently in Class 12 to prepare for the changes in curriculum. The government has since taken steps to ensure that the revised curriculum textbooks for the JEE are available on the market.

Also, the issue of relative weightage to performance ion the higher secondary certificate board exam and the JEE for admissions to the large section of unaided engineering colleges in the state has yet to be settled officially.

A state government committee, has studied the the issue and submitted its report. The government has since been in favor of 1 50:50 weightage for HSC and JEE scores in admission to unaided engineering colleges in the state. This is to ensure equal importance for Class 12 state board studies. But the government has not yet taken a formal decision to this effect.

The single common entrance test JEE will conducted in two parts, JEE Main and JEE Advanced. In that only 1.50 lakh students qualified in in JEE Main will qualify to appear for the JEE Advanced examination.

Admission to the IITs will be based on all india rank obtained in JEE Advanced, subject top the condition that such candidate are in top 20 percentile of successful candidates of their boards in applicable categories. The ministry prefers a 60:40 weightage ratio for the JEE and Board exam scores, but has left to the state governments to take a call on the matter for admissions to the unaided engineering colleges.
