Punjab Technical University To Set Up 4 Institutes

Four New Institutes By PTU
Punjab Technical University's Director, Dean of Research and Consultancy Dr.Anirudh Pratap Singh, in a meeting held at Kapurthala announced that PIT (Punjab Institute of Technology) which is similar to IIT will be set up at Kapurthala. It shall run only PG (Postgraduate Programmes) and three other PIT's for Under Graduate Programmes at Mansa, Nandgarh and Rajpura.

He briefly explained about PIT. He introduced PIT as the largest Technical University of India. He said that PTU was established on Jan 16, 1997 in a Teansit Campus. PTU was then, later shifted to its own 78.16 acres campus in 2008. PTU started its journey with 9 Engineeirng and 5 management colleges affiliated to it.

Today, Punjab University has the strength of more than 400 colleges, 400000 students and more than 20 Campuses. Dr. AP Singh gave the details of the university related fees for all the courses. Dr.Singh said that it is very interesting to note that PTU offers Multi-Entry-Multi-Exit facility wherein the students undergo two semesters of a graduation period at their convenience of time and economy. The university also has lateral entry system.

The university has established more than 450 examination centres across the country, so that the students can appear in the exam in the native places. PTU examination system handles more than 25 lack answer books per annum and declares result much prior to commencement of the next examination. The detailed mark cards of past students are issued simultaneously.

Some of the major initiatives taken up by the University are as follows :

  • Online Counselling Process
  • AIEEE instead of CET for admissions to Engineering Stream
  • Teaching in English, Punjabi and Hindi to cater to the Rural students of first and second year students.
  • Introduction of compulsory subject of Communication Skills, Personality Development and Human Values in each stream.
  • Scholarship fund of Rs. 3.2 crore.

Fee waiver scheme for Economically Weak students : Dr.Singh stated that PTU is a Self Financed University and is not receiving any grants from the Government or the UGC. The corpus fund for the year 2011-12 of the university is Rs. 800 crore. The investments is the Self Financed universities are both from Public as well as Private sectors which is more than Rs.5000 crore in PTU affiliated colleges and Learning Centres.

The academic programmes are classified into two modes such as

  • Regular Mode and
  • Distance Education Mode.

The academic programmes in Regular mode include AICTE courses, Non-AICTE Courses, M.Tech Programme, M.Phil, Ph.D Programmes. He said that PTU has affiliated with more than 100 Engineering Colleges . Besides all these there are 139 Colleges having Management and Computer Application courses. 37 institutions imparting Pharmacy Courses. 11 Colleges imparting Hotel Management Education. 6 Colleges providing Architecture Education and 21 Regional Centre for M.Tech and Ph.D in different branches of Engineering and Management and 1 Regional Centrre for M.Pharmacy.

It also includes more than2000 Learning centres of PTU are providing professional education through Distance Learning all over country and abroad.
