Competitive Profession In Medical Field
Medical profession is one of the most competitive and highly rated professions due to the fact that it offers prospects of a financially as well as a socially satisfying career.

The healthcare sector is flourishing at a gigantic rate in sync with several advancing factors such as hi-tech medical systems, innovative business models, hi-tech medical systems etc. Today's youth have to be fully geared up to smartly utilize the opportunities available.

There are a galore of options for students who want to pursue a career in healthcare. Listed below are few options that the students can explore after completing Higher Secondary Science -

Courses other than MBBS: Students can also choose options like BAMS (ayurveda), BHMS (homeopathy) & BUMS (Unani), which are also quite successful and trusted as effective method of medication. Options of residential medical officers, own practice are open for them or can study further for specialization which is another 3 years degree course.

Non-Physician Courses in medical field: Besides the above, courses like BDS (Dental Science), B Pharmacy etc. are also available. These courses have further scope for post graduation and one can either start own practice or be empanelled with any hospital. B Pharmacy students can get engaged in their own pharmacy shop and explore the business opportunity.

Bio-Tech: Biotechnology is another field with promising career opportunities in this decade. It is a scientific research oriented field. Its use and application ranges from fields like agriculture to industry (food, pharmaceutical, chemical, textiles etc.), medicine, nutrition, etc.

Clinical Research: This branch determines the safety and effectiveness of medications. One can go for graduation/post graduation in this field and pursue his/her career in clinical research organizations.

Nursing Care - People who wish to get into nursing care can pursue graduation in nursing (B.Sc. Nursing) or study the course GNM (General Nursing & Midwifery) or ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) and get into this profession.

MBA/MHA - Students who wish to get into management stream of the corporate hospitals can pursue MBA in Healthcare or MHA (Masters in Hospital Administration). Also, functions like HR, Finance, IT, Material Management, etc. have immense scope in the sector.

Technicians : Earlier, majority of the workforce was hired based on the work experience the person possessed, but today certified professionals with work experience are valued more than the non-certified ones. Foreseeing the future, we can assess that more emphasis would be on hiring certified professionals like Perfusionist, PFT technicians, Histopathy technicians, Cath Lab technicians, CSSD (Central Sterile Supply Department) technician , Optometrist, Radiology technician & operation theatre technicians etc. who are currently driven by their own developed expertise.

Quality & Project Mgmt: In order to gauge the quality of services delivered, Quality Council of India has also devised a system through the regulatory body NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals). Hence, quality professionals are also required by this industry for working towards the accreditation of the hospitals, similarly business development and project management too is in rising demand for this sector.

Wellness: The increasing health awareness in people for wellness has made people diet & physique conscious hence the following professionals also have plenty of consultancy opportunities.

  • Dietician: 2 Years of Diploma course or 3 years of post-graduation course in Dietetics after graduation in Home Science.
  • Physiotherapist: Bachelor in Physiotherapy is a 3 year degree course. Qualified professionals can set up their own consultancy and these occupations also have proven to be good source of income.

Additionally, on the lighter side, career in fitness centers, health spa, etc. can also be one of the striking options. Besides diagnosis and treatment, there are ample of career opportunities in preventive care segment too which is currently in primary focus.
