World Heart Day History:

The day is the brainchild of Antoni Bayés de Luna who was the president of the World Heart Federation (WHF) from 1997-99. It was in 1999 that he succeeded to bring around the World Health Organization (WHO) in sanctioning the establishment of World Heart Day. Since then the world is observing every September 28 as the World Heart Day

World Heart Day Significance:

World Heart Day aims to promote global awareness regarding cardiovascular diseases so that people can learn how to take care of their hearts and we together can beat the disease from causing millions of deaths every year.

To inform those unaware, heart diseases claim a staggering 18.6 million lives each year - which is nearly half of all deaths caused by all non-communicable diseases globally. Thanks to the growing awareness created by the celebration of this day, world leaders in May 2012 had to commit to reducing global mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025.
