What is the relevance of counselling for students?

Counselling is the process of selecting the desired seats in desired colleges for professional courses according to ascending order of rankings (for example, 1 to 1,000).

Usually, counselling would be conducted in order to select the seats in Medical, Dental, Engineering and Architecture courses, according to the candidate's ranking in entrance examination.

Every board / state will conduct respective entrance examinations to measure a student's talent in the examination, and they will provide ranking to each candidate based on the scores.

For example, if there are 100 engineering colleges and 10 branches in it, all the 100 colleges may or may not be good enough for studies, and all the branches may not be suitable to opt for, or some may be. So in order to ease out the decision-making process for selecting the suitable one, counselling is essential.

On the other hand, if the seats are lesser than the number of students appearing for the entrance examination, for instance 25,000 seats against 15 lakh applicants, then the process of counselling comes into picture to help students choose the right course, according to their marks in the exam.

Purpose of counselling - is it really needed for students?
Counselling is much needed for the students to have a workable and appropriate future. The top ranker will choose the top college and top branch. Even the student with average score will get into good college to pursue higher education.

It is a process of carefully selecting the best option out of many options.

What are the types of counselling conducted by different examination boards?
There are two types of counselling - Online and Offline. All the States and boards have their own entrance exam and counselling process.

Online counselling - It is the process of selecting / choosing the options online, via online enabled counselling system (online option entry system).

Offline counselling - It is the manual process of selecting the option in the list of options which are available at the time of counselling.

Benefits for the students:
Primarily, by conducting the counselling session, students will

  • have an opportunity to select their choice institution out of the many, via offline or online for B.Tech courses in IITs or NITs.
  • pursue their higher education in the subject of their interest.

What happens during the counselling session?
During the counselling process candidate's are freely allowed to chose / select their choice of college and course. Thereafter, take decisions based on their choices.

Who is eligible for counselling? Criteria.
Candidates who have successfully qualified in the entrance examination and document verification process are eligible for the counselling process.

What is the disadvantage?
