Gadadhar Chattopadhyay, who later became known as Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, was born on February 18, 1836, into an impoverished Brahmin family from Kamarpukur village in West Bengal's Hooghly district.
According to most sources, the saint's Vedantic guru, Totapuri, a naked monk from Punjab, given him the title of 'Paramahansa' (a Sanskrit religio-theological appellation honour bestowed to Hindu spiritual tutors who have gained enlightenment).
During a period of strong spiritual crisis and serious breakdown of humanism in nineteenth-century Bengal, the transcendent guru became the prominent figure for Hinduism's comeback. He was admired for his nonconformity and was known for his warmth and commitment.
For the benefit of his disciples, Ramakrishna was recognised for breaking down difficult spiritual folktales in the most logical manner. The yogi's teachings captivated atheist Narendranath Datta, who later became Swami Vivekananda, his most famous disciple.
On the 186th birth anniversary of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, here are some intriguing facts about the 19th-century visionary master:
- He attended school till the age of twelve but dropped out since formal education did not interest him.
- He married Saradamoni Mukhopadhyay, a five-year-old girl, at the age of 23, who became known as Maa Sarada later.
- When Saradamoni reached the age of joining the sage in Dakshineshwar, Ramakrishna had already taken up the hermit's life.
- He was devoted to Goddess Kali and knew the Puranas, Ramayan, Mahabharat, and Bhagavat Puran very well.
- His major student, Swami Vivekananda, founded the Ramakrishna Order, which helped the expansion of mission posts around the world. The Mission was the foundation of the Ramakrishna Movement, also known as the Vedanta Movement, which was a worldwide spiritual movement.
- According to the records, Ramakrishna urged Vivekananda to watch after the followers' welfare and to "educate them" after his death.
- Ramakrishna's followers believed him to be Lord Vishnu's avatar or incarnation.
- Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa was diagnosed with clergyman's throat, which developed into throat cancer, and he died on August 16, 1886.
