National Mathematics Day is celebrated across the country on December 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. He was born in 1887 in Erode in Tamil Nadu to an Iyengar Brahmin family. Ramanujan is one of the youngest Fellows of the Royal Society and only the second Indian to achieve after Ardaseer Cursetjee.

 

This mathematical analyst lived only for 32 years during British India and contributed a lot to mathematics that includes number theory and infinite series. The Indian Government declared December 22 as the National Mathematics day in 2012 on the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivas Ramanujan. Then the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh announced that annually the birth anniversary of Ramanujan will be celebrated as the National Mathematics Day.

  • Ramanujan published the first of his papers in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society and slowly gained recognition. 
  • In 1913 Srinivasa Ramanujan began a correspondence with the British mathematician Godfrey H. Hardy. It led to a special scholarship from the University of Madras and a grant from Trinity College, Cambridge. 
  • Ramanujan started his travel to England in 1914 despite the religious objections. 
  • Godfrey H. Hardy tutored him and associated with him in some research works.
  • Srinivasa Ramanujan worked out on many things such as Riemann series, the elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series and the functional equations of the zeta function besides working on his own theory of divergent series. 
  • He also made further advances in the partition of numbers in England. 
  • The papers of Ramanujan were published in England and European journals and selected to the Royal Society of London in 1918.

    • The mathematical genius of the country, Ramanujan, was born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu. 
    • At the age of 11, Ramanujan began showing some miracles in mathematics and by 12 years of age, he had mastered many theorems and trigonometry without any assistance. 
    • He spent around five years in Cambridge along with Hardy and Littlewood to publish his findings. 
    • Srinivasa Ramanujan was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree which was later renamed PhD in March 1916 for his contributions on highly composite numbers. 
    • During his stay in England, Ramanujan's health deteriorated with several problems. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis and vitamin deficiency. 
    • He returned to Madras Presidency in 1919 and soon thereafter died in 1920 at the age of 32.

      Ramanujan Lost Notebook

      Ramanujan contracted tuberculosis in 1917. In the year 1919, he returned to India and breathed his last on April 26, 1920. Srinivas Ramanujan left a sheaf of pages and three notebooks which are popularly called the ''lost notebook.'' These books and pages contain many unpublished results. After close to 100 years of Ramanujan's death, many mathematicians across the world still verify them to find out the result.
