International Literacy Day is observed every year on September 8 across the world. This is the most important day that makes humans aware of where they stand in developing a better society. Literacy means the ability to write and read. According to the latest reports, the global literacy rate stands at 86.3%. The India literacy rate is at 74% and Kerala stands at the top position in the country.

In 1966, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) organised the 14th general conference and announced that September 8 will be the International Literacy Day. Literacy is also the key component of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
