Vishu 2026 is here! One of Kerala's most beloved and auspicious festivals, Vishu is celebrated as the Malayalam New Year with great joy, devotion, and cultural pride. Observed annually on April 15, Vishu marks the first day of the Malayalam month of Medam as per the Malayalam solar calendar.

This year, people across Kerala, Tulu Nadu, and Mahe are celebrating Vishu 2026 with tremendous fervour, optimism, and hope for a prosperous year ahead.
What is Vishu? Meaning and Significance
The word "Vishu" means "equal" in Sanskrit - a reference to the vernal equinox when day and night are of equal length. Vishu marks the astronomical new year for the people of Kerala and is considered one of the most auspicious days in the Malayalam calendar.
It is believed that what you see first on Vishu morning - known as Vishukkani - sets the tone for the entire year ahead. This is why families put great care and thought into arranging the Kani the night before, so that the first sight of the new year is filled with prosperity and divine blessings.
Vishu is not just a religious occasion - it is a rich cultural celebration that brings families together through rituals, feasts, gifts, and fireworks.
Key Traditions and Rituals of Vishu
1. Vishukkani - The First Auspicious Sight
The most sacred tradition of Vishu is Vishukkani, which literally means "the first thing seen on Vishu." The eldest member of the family wakes up early in the morning and arranges a beautiful display near the idol of Lord Vishnu or Krishna. The Kani typically includes:
- Kani Konna (golden cassia flowers - the flower of Vishu)
- Raw rice and white linen cloth
- Coconut and golden cucumber (Kani Vellarikka)
- Betel leaves and arecanut
- A lit lamp (Nilavilakku)
- Holy scriptures and a mirror
- Gold ornaments and coins
Family members are then led to the Kani with their eyes closed, so the first thing they see upon opening their eyes is this auspicious arrangement. It symbolises abundance, prosperity, and a fresh start.
2. Vishu Kaineetam - The Gift of Prosperity
Vishu Kaineetam is the tradition where elders give money - usually coins or currency notes - to younger members of the family, children, and household helpers. This gesture symbolises blessings for a prosperous and happy new year.
3. Sadhya - The Grand Vishu Feast
No Kerala festival is complete without a Sadhya - a traditional vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf. The Vishu Sadhya includes a spread of rice, dal, sambar, avial, thoran, payasam, papadam, and a variety of pickles and chutneys. Families gather together to enjoy this elaborate meal as a symbol of togetherness and gratitude.
4. Vishu Padakkam - Fireworks
Vishu Padakkam (fireworks and firecrackers) is another beloved tradition, especially among children. Bursting crackers at dawn and throughout the day adds to the festive spirit and is considered a way to drive away evil and welcome the new year with brightness and noise.
5. New Clothes - Puthukodi
Wearing new clothes (Puthukodi) on Vishu is a cherished tradition. Families purchase new outfits for every member, and putting on these new clothes after seeing the Vishukkani is considered auspicious.

Why is Kani Konna (Golden Shower Flower) Special for Vishu?
The Kani Konna - the bright yellow flowers of the Golden Shower tree (Cassia fistula) - is the official flower of Vishu and also the state flower of Kerala. These flowers bloom exactly around the time of Vishu every year, making them a natural symbol of the season. A Vishu Kani without Kani Konna is considered incomplete. The golden yellow colour of the flowers symbolises gold, wealth, and good fortune.
