It is not just a chemical with a strong odour; it is the protective layer that surrounds the Earth, protecting it from many harmful substances and attacks from bursting stars in space. Scientists demonstrated that fission processes occur continuously in the sun and other stars. If the chemicals, gases, and other reaction products reach the Earth directly, they will endanger the planet's safety and survival. The ozone layer primarily protects the earth.

The ozone layer is important to the planet's temperature and the survival of life. It functions as a shield, absorbing the bulk of the Sun's dangerous UV energy. Without this safeguard, our environment would be jeopardized, resulting in negative consequences for human health and biodiversity.

What exactly is Ozone Layer Depletion?

Ozone layer depletion is the thinning of the upper atmosphere's ozone layer. This occurs when chlorine and bromine atoms in the atmosphere come into touch with ozone and destroy it. One chlorine atom can destroy 100,000 ozone molecules. It is destroyed faster than it is formed. When some chemicals are exposed to intense ultraviolet radiation, they emit chlorine and bromine, which leads to ozone layer depletion. Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) are substances that deplete the ozone layer. Chlorofluorocarbon, carbon tetrachloride, hydrochlorofluorocarbons, and methyl chloroform are all ozone-depleting compounds containing chlorine. Halons, methyl bromide, and hydro bromofluorocarbons are ozone-depleting bromine-containing compounds.

The depletion of the ozone layer poses a serious threat to the Earth's existing life forms. As a result, celebrations like Ozone Day emphasise the importance of worldwide cooperation in eliminating the pollutants and human activities that endanger the ozone layer.
