5 Common Mistakes To Avoid In IAS Exam

Civil Service Preliminary: You Can't Expect A Question Paper Without These TopicsCivil Service Preliminary: You Can't Expect A Question Paper Without These Topics

1. Not Reading Official Information

Many aspirants including the seniors spread rumours that are not facts. As a Civil Services aspirant, you should always cross-check information you've with the official sources. One should never encourage the information that has no substantial proof.

By reading the official information, one can gain the knowledge in other areas. For instance, if you are looking for the facts on physical geography, the official sources also provide points on the economic geography next to it. This will help you gain more knowledge.

2. More Books Will Bring Success

There is a belief in the market that a Civil Services aspirant should know everything and read as many books as possible. Unfortunately, hundreds of books are available in the market for a single topic. You might be positive on this point because you believe that more knowledge is surely an added advantage.

To be honest with you, almost all the publishers cover the same topics with a different presentation. Referring to many books will make you face ambiguity.

3. Not Maintaining Notes While Studying

Everyone looks at your scores and no one cares how much you have studied for the exam. Similarly, how much you have studied is not the point, how you attempted the question paper is important. It is impossible to remember all the facts while studying.

Hence, aspirants should start preparing their own notes and highlighting important points while studying. Theis activity even helps you during your revisions and keeps the facts on your finger tips.

4. Not Understanding What To Read In The Newspaper

Undeniably, the current affairs section is the most important area and many questions are based on daily happenings. In fact, this section is required in the main examination and interview as well.

When it comes to current affairs, the newspaper reading stands on top. Many students spend more than two hours a day reading the newspaper. We will never tell you to do otherwise if you are giving equal importance to the static knowledge. What you are reading in the newspaper is important.

Aspirants have to be clear whether they are reading the opinions or discussion. One should meticulously read about the government's policies and schemes besides legislation issues. While reading, we suggest you prepare notes.

5. Relying On Coaching Institutes' Study Material

We do not want to comment on whether coaching is required or not. Indeed, we want to add a statement on the study material issued by the coaching institutes.

Many coaching institutes provide the study material and aspirants follow them without any second thought. They need to assess the material whether they are touching all the important areas or not. They should also know how the important topics are addressed.
