Two new programs have been announced by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in the field of Statistics and Data Science. The new Bachelor of Science (BS) program of 4-years and Bachelor of Science-Master of Science (BS-MS) programs of 5-years in Statistics and Data Science have been approved by the Academic Senate and Board of the Institute from the next academic year 2021-22. The admissions to the programs will be done on the basis of JEE (Advanced) score.
"Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Machine Learning play a major role in finding solutions to so many global problems. The focus is expected to be on developing models with mathematical roots that can be implemented through data science research in the next 20 years," said Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur.
"The programs will flourish careers of students and build skills related to the rapidly evolving interdisciplinary field of big data analytics. The students will be able to pursue advanced careers in the data science industry and acquire advanced studies in classical and modern statistics, and data science," added Prof. Karandikar.

Students going through these programs in statistics and data science will be exposed to a variety of structured and unstructured data with applications for real-world problem-solving. These will include data related to health, bioinformatics and digital health, biomedicine, retail, image processing data, banking, and financial data, seismological data, energy sector, social media and social network analysis, transport, agriculture, etc.
"The students will also be able to work on health in collaboration with the proposed School of Medical Research and Technology (SMRT). This will give the much-needed impetus to research and analytics in this important emerging field related to information and digital health," he further added.
"To acquaint students with the new data challenges and the associated cutting-edge technology, the institute will be inviting professionals from industries for guest lectures, seminar presentations, real data analysis projects, and industry internships for students," Prof. Karandikar said.
