Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issues new UGC guidelines for semester examinations 2020 conducted by Universities and Institutions. Check details.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) permits universities and institutions to conduct the examinations. In a letter to Union Higher Education Secretary, MHA permitted conduct of examinations. The final semester examinations are to be compulsorily conducted by September 2020 as per the UGC Guidelines on Examinations and Academic Calendar for the universities. The exams should be conducted also as per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) approved by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The UGC has released the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the conduct of examinations. The Commission has released the detailed SOP for the conduct of examinations (Annexure 1) and UGC revised guidelines (Annexure 2).

UGC Guidelines 2020 Important Points

  • The mode of Terminal semester/ final year examinations (2019-20) by universities are required to complete the process by the end of September 2020.
  • A special chance will be provided to students, if not appeared for the final semster exams.
  • The students of terminal semester/ final year students having backlog should compulsorily be evaluated by conducting examinations.

UGC Revised Guidelines 2020

Earlier, the University Grants Commission (UGC) constitutes an Expert Committee to make recommendations regarding the issues related to Examinations and Academic Calendar. The Commission accepted the report of the Committee and approved by the "UGC Revised Guidelines On Examinations and Academic Calendar for the Universities in view of CPVID-19 Pandemic."

  • The academic evaluation is very important for students that gives confidence and satisfaction.
  • The terminal semesters / final year examination to be conducted by the universities/ institutions by the end of September 2020. The exams can be held in offline/ online/ blended (offline+online) mode.
  • The final year students having backlog should compulsorily be evaluated by conducting examinations.
  • If a student fails to appear for the final semester exams 2020, he/she may be given an opportunity to appear in special examinations for such courses/ papers, which may be conducted by the universities as and when feasible. However, this is applicable only for the current academic session 2019-20 as a one-time measure.
  • The guidelines regarding intermediate semester/ year examinations, as notified in April will remain unchanged. Intermediate students will be evaluated based on internal assessment.

UGC Guidelines For Intermediate Semester

The UGC has clearly stated that intermediate students (1st & 2nd year) will be promoted to the final year based on the internal assessment.

UGC Guidelines For Terminal Semster

As per the UGC revised calendar, the final/ terminal semester exams should be conducted by the end of September 2020. The university final exams can be held in online or offline mode as per feasibility and suitability.

What is the Difference Between Terminal And Intermediate Semester?

The Terminal semster meaning the last/ final year of a course. The intermediate meaning is the semster other than last/ final semster. The first semster is also called as intermediate.

HRD Minister tweeted, "The UGC has revisited its earlier guidelines related to university examinations. In view of the safety, career progression and placements of the students and their larger interests, after consulting @HMOIndia and @MoHFW_INDIA , it has been decided that"

(1) Intermediate semester students will be evaluated based on internal assessment (as per earlier issued guidelines) and (2) Evaluation of the terminal semester students which was to be done through examinations in the month of July, now their examinations will be conducted by the end of September-2020, following the guidelines laid down by @MoHFW_INDIA for #COVIDー19."

Earlier, HRD Minister confirmed the exam dates of JEE Main, JEE Advanced and NEET 2020 exams. The entrance exams will be conducted in September 2020.
