The college received permanent affiliation of the U.G.C. under 12(B) w.e.f. on 16th January 1996.

Brief History:

The genesis of the college can be traced to the vision, hard work and sacrifice of a handful of people viz Late Santi Ranjan Bhattacharjee, Late Anath Bandhu Bose, Late Prithwish Chandra Bhadury, Late Principal Uma Prasanna Dey and Late Principal Subodh Chandra De Sarkar who felt the need for establishing a college exclusively for girls of this area.

The idea was mooted at a meeting of the representatives of different communities of the cosmopolitan township of Tinsukia on the Christmas Evening of 1965. It was resolved to start the college with Pre-University and Degree classes and to apply for permission of the Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh.

On the basis of the application submitted by the Ad-hoc Committee of the college on 27th December 1965, the Inspector of Colleges, Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh visited the college on 10th June 1966.

Late U. P. Dey an eminent educationist, joined the college as the Principal and with the first batch of 78 P.U. students the college was formally started on 9th July, 1966.

Dr. Indira Miri, the well-known educationist, blessed the ocassion. The classes were held regularly in the Durgabari Hall and the annex building.

A makeshift kutcha structure was constructed in the own land of the college in 1970. Late J. B. Hagjer the then Education Minister of Assam, laid the foundation stone of the college and sanctioned a grant of Rs. 500/- p.m. to the college.

The foundation stone of the permanent hostel was laid by the Late Lakshyadhar Choudhury, who was later become the Education Minister of Assam.

The college has carved a niche for itself in the academic arena of the state by dint of brilliant results both in Higher Secondary and Degree Examinations. Students of this college have topped the list of successful candidates in the SEBA / AHSEC and Dibrugarh University Examinations on more than one ocassions.

The brilliant results, quality of education imparted, strict discipline and the ideal ambience of the college have attracted students not only from Tinsukia and neighbouring areas but its catchments area extends to the other district of the state and other states also. The college has become a veritable melting pot of diverse cultures and different peoples creating a confluence of ideas and attitude among the students.

The college is aware that it must do its bit to remain temporarily relevant keeping pace with the changing times. Steps are being taken to introduce complementary career-oriented courses to help the students face the increasingly competitive job market.

It is felt that in the context of the present times, the college can no longer remain a cloistered academic institution but has to reach out to the community and a number of extension activities have been taken up accordingly. The aim of the college is to produce batches of students that are, at the same time, educated in the real sense of the term and socially conscious human beings who understand the worth of human value.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts & Commerce stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts & Commerce stream under Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh.
