Williamnagar Government College, formerly known as Williamnagar College is situated at the centre of Williamnagar town, East Garo Hills District, in the State of Meghalaya. It was established on the 6th May, 2000 as a private College by the collective effort of the senior citizens, the general public, NGO’s and student leaders. The main objective of establishing the college was to provide educational Institution for higher education within the reach of common people in the District. The need for imparting quality education for Undergraduate studies was kept uppermost in mind in the founding years. The College was then managed and run by the Governing Body comprising of prominent senior citizens as members along with the Principal and eight Teachers till the year 2009.
At the initial stage of its founding, the College was offering six subjects in Pass course and two subjects with Honours. The college was later granted permission by the Affiliating University to offer Honours in all the subjects to provide aspiring students opportunity to pursue quality education and learn to become a self-dependent, productive and responsible citizens of the society.
The College was provincialized by the Government of Meghalaya on 18th February, 2009 and is recognised under section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956 and affiliated to the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Meghalaya, Shillong. At Present, six departments are offering BA Honours courses viz: English (Honours), Garo (Honours), Political Science (Honours), Education (Honours), History (Honours), Economics (Honours) and has a scope for introducing more disciplines of studies in near future.
The main objective of the institution is to provide all aspiring students opportunities to pursue quality education and prepare them to be responsible and productive citizens.
Located in the centre of Williamnagar town, the college infrastructure comprises an administrative office, a library, a Teachers’ Common room, Two Students’ Common Room, classrooms and a spacious playground.
IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) Study Centre, operating in the College premises, offers courses in the Distance learning and Correspondence mode at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level.
The college has permission to conduct examination for Undergraduate regular courses under NEHU and courses under IGNOU.
The faculty of the college consist of qualified, dedicated and competent teachers and students enrolment numbers more than one thousand. The teaching fraternity together with the other stakeholders of this institution is working in tandem to fulfil the hopes and dreams of the visionary founding members.

Students may apply for the various types of Scholarships to the Government / Agency, etc., through the National Scholarship Portal. The Government / Agencies awarding scholarships have their specific norms regarding eligibility of applicants for receipt of scholarships. Applicants for scholarships are responsible for knowing the criteria. The College has a Nodal officer at the institutional level to assist the students and to verify their applications before sending to state nodal officer. The disbursals of Scholarship to eligible applicants are directly credited to their bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
