West Guwahati Commerce College, Guwahati - The origin of the West Guwahati Commerce College dates back to the year 1992 in when a prominent citizen of the locality namely Dr. Binoy Kr.

The thickly populated area in between Gauhati University at Jalukbari and Maligaon is developing fast, industrially and commercially. A large number of ancillary commercial centres have grown up in and around the Head Quarters of N.F. Railway with hectic business activities during the last one decade. The need of professionally educated and trained youths especially in *Business Management *Accountancy and *Banking was acutely felt. For such potentially growing area, job oriented education, especially in Commerce Stream was found to be the need of the hour in view of ever increasing unemployment situation in the country. Keeping these aspects in view, a handful of academicians with the help of intellectuals of the locality gave birth to this institution as early as in May 1992. Since then, the local aspirants for Commerce and Management Education, have been trained up under the devoted guidance of teachers, resulting in brilliant examination results under the Board of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council and the Gauhati University. The college is situated on the northern side of the Maligaon Over Bridge.The College in a building away from cacophony of city, the site is very ideal for both teaching and learning in a calm, quiet and serene atmosphere. From the point of view of communication, the College is just two minute's walking distance from the city bus route, with a stoppage at Baripara. It is only about 2 Kilometers distant from Gauhati University. The Assam Government has allotted 4 (Four) Bighas of land for the college, which we have developed with earth filling and constructed a big building consisting of 6 rooms near Assam Engineering College at Jalukbari.

The land is further being developed with earth filling for construction of other houses. The college may provide Hostel accommodation to the needy student's (boy's) only at this place.

VISION

The vision of W.G. Com. College is to proceed in a positive way towards improvement of present conventional higher education system to face the challenges of management of industries and business. The college has initiated a major programme for the next five-years to ensure that the graduates who come out after successful completion of these courses would have knowledge, skills and aptitude for gaining employment in the wage sector in general and self employment in particular. The college has taken up a few extension activities through NSS and NCC units. It is also collaborating with state and central Govt. recognized organizations, NGO's for rendering community service. The college has started a few self-financing courses from the session 2007-2008. Performance appraisal of teaching staff is to be made for the entire faculty with the help of the formats drawn from G.U. A follow up action has been initiated by the Principal to maintain a class content record register. This may be a healthy practice in promoting quality education. The college has introduced the system of remedial classes from the academic year 2008-2009 for the upliftment of economically disadvantageous section of the society like SC, ST, and OBC and students of economically deprived to achieve academic excellence.
