West Bengal State University, Kolkata was established through an Act of the legislative assembly enacted by the West Bengal Act XXVIII of 2007.

It started functioning from the academic session 2008-09. In 2008 all colleges in the region, formerly affiliated to Calcutta University, were transferred to this University.

West Bengal State University was established to produce human resource capable of meeting scientific, technological and social challenges of modern world. Keeping in view the educational needs of the students, integrated courses are been offered up to PhD level.

The University is also preparing to launch vocational programs for its students. It is promoting cluster concept in its affiliated colleges. The University is working hard to develop infrastructural facilities for its students.

VISION

To emerge as a national player in education in a span of three years, improving the rank in NIRF within 100, and improving the position further to become a global player in higher education with a wide range of subjects, characterized by flexibility, transparency, competency, research ability, sustainability, inclusivity, commitment, feeling for the community, installings spirit of quest transcending the boundary of the country and reaching out to the global citizenry.

MISSION

To create an academic ecosystem catering to the needs and aspirations of young students of the district including many first generation learners, imparting to them man-making education, with skill sets that can be retrofitted with the changing requirements of time, so as to make them competitive within and outside the boundary of the country.
