Voorhees College, Vellore was founded in 1898. Its affiliated to University of Madras.
Voorhees College had its beginning in the year AD 1898 through the sacrificial efforts of the missionaries of American Arcot Mission (AAM), an offshoot of the Reformed Church of America. The original buildings of the college were built with the sacrificial donation of a large-minded American couple, Ralph and Elizabeth Rodman Voorhees. In memory of that ennobling act this college was appropriately named as Voorhees College. Rev Dr W I Chamberlain served as the First Principal of Voorhees College. Back in the 19th century, people in and around Vellore were struggling under the clutches of poverty, ignorance and spiritual backwardness. Missionaries of AAM, compelled by the love of Christ, started this citadel for higher learning. It is their vision that the students who are educated here would build their families, the society and consequently, the nation-at-large. Besides providing quality and affordable education, the college emphasizes the importance of Christian virtues and values. Many a student comes here from the rural areas of Vellore and nearby districts. It is interesting that many of our graduates turn out to be the first graduates in their respective families. Thus the college serves the needy ones of the society, providing a holistic education.
The college was initially known as the Arcot Mission College and it came into existence out of amalgamation in 1895, of the Arcot Academy at Ranipet and the Church of Scotland Mission High School at Vellore.
The Arcot Mission High School as the amalgamated school was called, was raised to the status of an intermediate college and was affiliated to the University of Madras in 1898. In 1957, the institution was raised to the status of a first grade college, offering instruction in four major subjects.
The institution was upgraded to post graduate college in 1975.
