Vivekananda Mahavidyalaya, Burdwan was established in 1964. The College is affiliated to the University of Burdwan and recongized by the UGC. 

The college was established to promote higher education in this area. The college is providing higher quality education to students and excels in areas pertaining to their all round development and up gradation of society at large.

The main aim of the college is to cater the needs of the rural youths of Bengal. The curriculum is designed by the Boards of Studies of Burdwan University.

The college is well equipped with all modern facilities. This University was started in 1960 with Sukumar Sen as its first Vice-chancellor.

It occupies an exalted place amongst the universities of West Bengal. It has been awarded with 4 star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to acknowledge the contribution of Burdwan University in the educational development of the state.

On the eve of Swami Vivekananda's Birthday Centenary in 1963, the District Magistrate of Burdwan Mr. K.P.S. Menon, Chairman of Zila Parishad, Mr. Narayan Chowdhury and other honourable citizens of Burdwan took initiatives to estabkish a new college in Burdwan town. Burdwan Municipality gifted a large chunk of land in the name of the proposed college in Sarshe Dange Mouza, Near Sadarghat. Mr. Prafulla Chandra Sen, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, laid the foundation stone for the proposed Vivekananda Mahavidyalaya at the spot on 8th March, 164, on 23rd trate Mr. K.P.S. Menon, as President Dr. Sailendranath Mukhopadhyaya, the renewed Physician, as the Vice President, and Chief Engineer of Burdwan Zila Parisad. Mr. Prafulla Kumar Pal, wa appointed the secretary to the committee. Meantime a number of illustrious educationists came forward to raise a found of nearly two lakh rupees for the college. Set in peaceful surrounding away from the hubbub of the town, the college officers and ideal atmoshpere for pursuing higher studies in the major arts and science subjects.

In 1964 the college was accorded the govt. affiliation as Govt. Sponsored College. On 26th August 964, the college was inaugurated formally. The Chief guest of the inauguration ceremony was the Director of Education, Govt. of West Bengal, Dr. Dhirendra Mohan Sen.

Setting out in a rather unceremonious way, the college has gradually occupied a glorious position in the field of higher education in West Bengal. Over time the college has growth both in structure and stature. Recently three building have been constructed to accommodate the growing number of student. Post graduate and Degree Honours Courses in Various subject have been introduced. The college has not merely created to the needs of students in Burdwan and its hinterland, but it has also been successful in maintaining a healthy, disciplined academic atmosphere for purposefull education.
