Vinoba Bhave University (VBU), Hazaribag was established in 1992.

as a teaching and affiliating state university, after the bifurcation of Ranchi University, by Act 3 of 1990 passed by Bihar assembly.

The University soon obtained a motto and a crest-Jeewanam Satya Sodhanam-an extract from one of Vinobaji’s couplets and an emblem consisting of a Mandala or Astamandala.
