Uma Arts & Nathiba Commerce Mahila College, Gandhinagar was established on 2nd July 1991 under the management of Sarva Vidyalaya Kelavani Mandal
It is one of the premier institutions established to provide facilities for higher education at UG and PG levels to the young women, in pursuit of academic excellence and to help them in the development of their intellectual, physical and moral faculties in safe surroundings with a view to making them disciplined citizens of our country.
The college is affiliated to Gujarat University, Ahmedabad and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 2(B) in April 1997 under Act, 1956. It is also recognized by UGC as a College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) on 17th October 2011.
It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.21 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) in the year 2011.
The college is located in a purely urban area, we continue getting students from the rural area, from the poor economic background and cutting across all caste and religious denominations. The college strives for equity towards all the students and strives to provide them the best education that they deserve and that they can afford.
The college provides education to almost 45% SC/ST/OBC and minority community and 100% women students, more than 70% of our students come from villages.
While lectures still from the backbone of teaching-learning, the process is strengthened and made more student-centric through student seminars, intensive lab work, projects and assignments, field visits and interactive and dialogic method of classroom teaching.
The faculty is actively engaged in research. A good percentage of teachers are involved in guiding doctoral research and undertaking projects and an even higher percentage is involved in individual research that may not be currently funded.
The faculty has been able to attract funding for a large number of major and minor research projects.
Many research papers, books, and abstracts have been published by the faculty in the past five years.
The institution is indeed responsive to the community needs and conducts various extension services/activities, as an integral part of the wholesome education process.
The college has adopted two villages, Dholakua and Bhimpura for its activities of community service, like health and hygiene awareness, Anti-female foeticide campaign, environment awareness, etc.
These villages are also adopted for the activities of the nature club. NCC unit of the college promotes the values of discipline and service mindedness among the students.
The college offers UG programmes in Sanskrit, English, Hindi, Gujarati, Geography, Psychology, Sociology, Economics and History and PG in Sanskrit (with English, Gujarati, and Hindi as subsidiary subjects).
Moreover, the Career Counseling cell and the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of the college offers need-based 27 courses to provide different skills to the rural girl students so that they can earn their own. Some of the courses are often repeated on the demand of the students. It also offers some certificate courses.
