Tinsukia College, Tinsukia was established on 1st September, 1956. It is one of the premier institution established by the strenuous efforts of Late B.K. Saraswatji who mobilised all required resources with the help of like minded citizens of Tinsukia, a part of the then Lakhimpur District to give rise to this great institution. Without their support and patronage, the college would never have come into being.
Till 1964, the college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati but after the establishment of Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh in 1965, it was automatically adopted by the Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh.
The college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956 and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade.
Brief History:
The maiden meeting of the adhoc-committee was held on 9th May, 1956 under the Chairmanship of Late Baleshwar Prasad Gupta and it was resolved to convene a public meeting on 20th May, 1956 in the Hindi English High School premises. Accordingly a public meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Md. M. Sultan, the erst-while Deputy Commissioner of the Lakhimpur District.
The public meeting resolved to open an intermediate Arts College from the academic session 1956. An organizing committee was formed under the Chairmanship of Late Jadu Nath Bhuyan to execute the decisions of the aforesaid meeting.
The first meeting of the organizing committee was held on 26th May, 1956 in the premises of Hindi English High School. The Govt. of Assam also initiated the process of allotting 15 Bighas of Land for this ambititious project. The inaugural ceremony of the college was held on 19th August, 1956 where the leading citizens of the town voluntarily contributed Rs. 36000/ (Rupees Thirty Six Thousand) in the inaugural ceremony itself.
On 1st September, 1956 is the red letter day in the annals of Tinsukia College when the rolls were called out for the first time.
Initially the college was housed in the present Senairam Higher Secondary School. It was only in 1961 that it was shifted to the present building and since then thousands of students have left the college and attained eminent positions in the social mainstream.
Expansion in terms of building and other infrastructural facilities as well as number of students continued and the college was upgraded to graduation level in 1958 with Arts and Commerce faculty. In 1964, Science faculty was added which made it a multifaculty institution of Higher Education.
At the initial stage, the college had been running on public contributions and generous donations from philanthropists. Later on, it was accorded the status of Deficit Grants-in-Aid college by the Govt. of Assam in 1962. In 1969, the college was recognized by the UGC which resulted into receipt of planned financial assistance under various development schemes of the UGC. The Govt. of Assam provincialised all deficit Grant-in-aid college w.e.f. 1st December, 2005 and as on today, it enjoys the status of a “Provincialised Institute”.
The college grew from strength to strength on the merit of its students, the dedication of its teachers and the vision of the Principals. For an institute which began its journey with handful of students and four teachers, the college has grown into a premier educational institute with over 2500 students on the Rolls and more then 80 members of the Teaching staff.
Being multi-faculty and multi-disciplinary co-educational institution,the students pursue various Higher Secondary and Undergraduate courses in Humanities, Science Commerce and Management . It also has a vibrant study centre of Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University offering Three Years Degree Courses in BA, B.Com, BBA, BMC and BPP (12 Months) and Post-Graduate courses in Political Science, English, Sociology, Assamese, MSW. It also conducts Diploma in Elementary Education for TET Teachers.
