About Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University

Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Chennai was established in the year 1989.

The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Populary known as the acronym 'TANUVAS', blossomed on 20.09.1989 as the first Veterinary University of the country, through the Tamil Nadu State Government Act 42 of 1989. The seed for the establishment and growth of TANUVAS was sown as early as 1876, when the Madras Veterinary College was started as an Agricultural School in Chennai to offer diploma and certificate course in the field of veterinary and animal sciences. The Institute attained the status of the college on 01.10.1903, when it started functioning at Dobbin Hall, Chennai and admitted 20 students for a three-year diploma course called GMVC (Graduate of Madras Veterinary College). It was the only veterinary college in the erstwhile composite Madras State till mid 1950's.

The internationally acclaimed Madras Veterinary College, Chennai, the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi (presently under Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalitha Fisheries University) and other Training and Research Centres, Research Farms, Farmers’ Training Centres, and diagnostic laboratories were the constituent units. TANUVAS later established a College of Food and Dairy Technology at Koduvalli, two more veterinary colleges at Tirunelveli and Orathanadu, a College of Poultry Production and Management at Hosur, besides a number of Training and Research Centres (located in most of the districts), and a Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Madurai. Additionally, three more veterinary colleges have been established during 2020 at Salem, Theni and Udumalpet.

At present, TANUVAS has a total of seven Veterinary Colleges, a College of Food and Dairy Technology, a College of Poultry Production and Management, 10 Research Farms, 15 Research Laboratories and Diagnostic Centres, 20 Veterinary University Training and Research Centres, three Farmers’ Training Centres, and four Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

The undergraduate courses offered include B.V.Sc. & A.H., B.Tech. (Food Technology), B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) and B.Tech. (Poultry Technology). Besides, postgraduate courses viz. M.V.Sc. in 22 disciplines, M.Tech. in three disciplines, M.Sc. in Bioinformatics, M.Sc. in Biostatistics, and MBA in Food and Livestock Business Management, Ph.D. in 20 disciplines of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Ph.D. in Food Technology, five PG Diploma and a number of PG Diploma and Certificate courses in distance mode are also offered.

VISION

TANUVAS desires to be an institution of international excellence in providing education and pursuing research in the field of Veterinary, Animal and Food Sciences and to develop innovations, disseminate scientific knowledge and skill for enhanced livestock and poultry productivity through the use of technologies of social, economic and environmental relevance developed by adopting a team approach.

MISSION

TANUVAS was established on 20th September 1989 with a mandate to impart education, further the development of learning and prosecution of research and undertake extension to rural people in co-operation with the Government departments in different branches of veterinary, animal and food sciences.

A total of 6,733 students completed their under-graduation, 2,265 post-graduation and 726 doctoral degrees, since 1989. In addition, 52 students have completed their PG Diploma and 387 students through distance education programmes on specialized areas to improve clinical skills and career opportunities.

TANUVAS bestowed with the Sardar Patel ICAR Outstanding Institution Award for the year 2011.

TANUVAS received the “NAIP Best Performance Award” from ICAR, New Delhi in 2012 for e-contents developed for B.V.Sc. & A.H.

Veterinary College and Research Institutes at Orathanadu and Tirunelveli included in the first schedule of the Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984 (52 of 1984) vide G.S.R./1296 (E) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.

ICAR accreditation granted to Madras Veterinary College, Chennai and Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal for five years from 16.03.2015 to 15.03.2020.
College of Food and Dairy Technology, Koduvalli has been recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for B.Tech and M.Tech in Food Technology and accredited to

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), for the Under graduate degrees offered by this institute. In addition, the College of Poultry Production and Management, Hosur has also been recognised by AICTE.

TANUVAS commenced Polytechnic Courses in Animal Sciences, the first of its kind in Animal and Veterinary Sciences in India since 2012.

First year subjects of B.V.Sc. & A.H. course were translated in Tamil language and the text books were published in order to help the students hailing from rural areas.

Established an Internet Kiosk at Madras Veterinary College in 2012.

TANUVAS has bagged the prestigious Institutional Development Plan under National Agricultural Higher Education Programme to the tune of Rs. 28 crore.

TANUVAS has established modern libraries in all its constituent colleges and automated with Koha Integrated Library Management System. State-of-the-Art technologies such as RFID, CCTV Surveillance and Biometric Attendance System, implemented in all libraries. Digital library facility is available in all libraries with a rich collection of e-books and e-journals that are being subscribed by the University Library and accessed through the University Network.

Digitisation of institutional publications is regularly done and they are available online through the university digital repository and also through Krishi Kosh Institutional Repository of ICAR. Among 73 SAUs, TANUVAS is the top contributor to the national digital repository with more than 20,000 documents.
