Subarnarekha Mahavidyalaya(SM), Paschim Medinipur was established on 7th September, 1988. It is an affiliated and private college.

Subarnarekha Mahavidyalaya is a co- educational undergraduate college, situated in the pastoral setting of Gopiballavpur, a rural place in the South-Western regions of Paschim Medinipur District, West Bengal. On the banks of the river Subarnarekha or the river Golden Line, this verdurous seat of leaning its beauty and elegance being glammed up not by palatial buildings but with a well- decorated green campus and zealous academic ambience is just about 40 km away from the Sub-Divisional town, Jhargram and almost 70 km away from the district town, Medinipur (formerly known as Midnapore). It comes under the Geo-Political region “Jangal-Mahalâ€Â a linguistically-varied and culturally-diversified area which is mostly populated by the tribal people and splendidly enriched with their living and throbbing art and culture. This sylvan place on the borderlines of Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal (encompassed by Orissa, on one hand and Jharkhand, on the other) is well-decked with sporadically sublime presence of Sal, Piyasal and Mahua, and a not-far-off ecological park. The river Subarnarekha flowing by the place on the eastern side adds up serenity to the setting.

As there was no scope of higher education within a radius of 45Kms, the intellectual polity and a few undaunted enthusiasts with indomitable spirit and insatiable yearning for higher education had, for years after the Independence in 1947, been dreaming of an institution for higher education. Their sincere endeavor and untiring efforts got realized as Subarnarekha Mahavidyalaya was ultimately established on 7th September 1988 on the land donated by Nayabasan Janakalyan Vidyapeeth, a premier school in the locality. With 19 students and a small room, the college started its journey on 1st July, 1988 with B. Com. only. It received recognition from the government of West Bengal on 30th August, 1988.

It got its affiliation to Vidyasagar University on 31st March, 1990 w.e.f the session 1988- 89,course in Accountancy, then gradually it embellished itself with honours courses in Geography, Anthropology, English, Bengali, History, Sanskrit and Santali. We are looking forward to march on by introducing honours courses in a few more subjects. The college can now boast of producing graduates in all the three streams Arts, Science and Commerce. The college which at its nascent days had only a few students can now boast of almost 2300 students.

Initially, people from all walks of life donated generously for construction of its building. And the college is marching forward with financial help from both Central and State Governments, honorable M.P., M.L.A and well wishers. The college authority has been thinking erecting a new building. The college is now providing free wireless internet access throughout the campus.

The college is affiliated to Vidyasagar University, established in 1981 and named after one of the most illustrious sons of Bengal as well as one of the doyens of Indian Renaissance; Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. This is a renowned University in West Bengal with accreditation of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The college was started to promote higher education in this region and has well experienced teachers to enlighten the aspiring students and college offers under graduate course in Arts, commerce and science stream.

The objective of the college is to provide excellence in education at the undergraduate level to the students of all communities and especially to the financially backward students in the rural area of the state.
