St. Xavier's College, Ranchi was started by the Ranchi Jesuit Society, on 3rd July 1944 by the Ranchi Province of the Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order that traces its origin to St. Ignatius Loyola in 1540.

It is one of the premier institutions to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

The college is affiliated to Ranchi University, Ranchi and therefore it is a parent institution of this university and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

It is also recognized & approved by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bhubaneswar and re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (in 3rd Cycle) on 5th January 2013.

The college was first affiliated with Patna University, Patna from 1950-1960 the college was under Bihar University, Patna and when the Ranchi University, Ranchi came into existence in 1960, the college was affiliated with Ranchi University, Ranchi.

The University Grants Commission conferred Autonomous Status in 2005 and granted "College with Potential for Excellence" status in 2006.

The College is an autonomous college of Ranchi University, Ranchi. It offers three years undergraduate & two years postgraduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, & Management streams under the autonomous system. It also offers Vocational, PGD, & various Certificate courses.

Apart from these, the college offers two years Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course for those who have completed their graduation with minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.

Students here are admitted who completed their graduation from recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the Degree level. But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled with a relaxation 5% marks ineligibility for admission.
