St. Philomena's College (Autonomous), Mysuru was established on July 9, 1946. It is an autonomous Christian minority institution of academic excellence under the University of Mysore, Mysuru and managed under Mysore Diocesan Educational Society (Regd.).

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
 
The college is affiliated to University of Mysore, Mysuru and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 1st November 1956 under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.58 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) on May 5, 2014.

The college was declared open by His Highness Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, the Maharaja of Mysore- a rare honor and privilege for any institution.

It was history in the making in more ways than one and the first group of 380 Philomenites was aware of it. They knew that they were stepping into the very first one of the Private First Grade Colleges in the Royal City, affiliated to the University of Mysore. Even more importantly, St. Philomena's was the first private Degree Science College in the erstwhile Mysore Region.

Before its foundation, the college received its motto-from His Holiness the Pope. The Holy Father chose the maxim-“Caritas vestra magis ac magis abundent in Scientia”- May your love grow richer in knowledge. Caritas in Scientia - the first and last words of the quotation - became the motto of the college.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the Admission Criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.

The college conferred the status of "Autonomous" in 2011.

It has been declared by the UGC as a "College of Excellence" with effect from April 1, 2015.

The institution traces its roots to the learning and experience of over six decades of service in higher education. The overriding vision is to shape young men and women of integrity who can hold their own in the world and change society in significant ways.

At present, the college offers at the undergraduate level B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., BBA, BSW, BCA, BTHM as well as B.Voc. courses in Health Care Technology and Media & Entertainment.

Besides, there are 14 postgraduate courses in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Social Work, Commerce, English, Communication & Journalism, Economics, Sociology, Mathematics, Christianity and Holistic Spirituality.

Traditional courses co-exist with the newer, more challenging and contemporary courses such as Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Electronics, Computer Science, Social Work, Communication and Journalism, a UGC-sponsored vocational course in Functional English. UGC Add On courses in Biotechnology, Industrial Chemistry, Electric and Electronic Equipment Maintenance and Computer Networking.

The college has excellent infrastructure facility with a digital library, almost all classrooms are equipped with LCD projectors, the entire campus is networked with OFC, spacious playgrounds and newly built Indoor Stadium.
