School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, commonly known as SPA Delhi, was established in 1941.
It is co-educational public school, providing a regular course in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates.
School At A Glance:
Since its inception, the school was started as the Department of Architecture of the Delhi College of Engineering now the Delhi Technology University (DTU).
It was later affiliated to the University of Delhi, New Delhi and integrated with the School of Town and Country Planning which was established in 1955 by the Government of India to provide facilities for rural, urban and regional planning.
In 1959, the school was renamed as School of Planning and Architecture and conferred the status of "Deemed University" from the Government of India through the then Ministry of Education and Culture.
With this new status, the school had broadened its horizon by introducing new academic and extension programmes and promoting research and consultancy activities. It was recognized as "Institute of National Importance (INI)" under an Act of Parliament in 2015.
In 2008, Government of India established two more SPA's, namely SPA Bhopal and SPA Vijayawada. Later in 2014, Lok Sabha has passed a bill to make all the three SPA's "Centre of Excellence" on the pattern of IITs and IIMs. Therefore, now it is a college of national importance.
At present, the school offers planning, architecture and design courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
As we know, B.Arch course is one of the oldest in the country and Bachelor of Planning course was started in 1989. Besides, the school offers 10 postgraduate programmes and two undergraduate programmes along with the doctoral programmes run by all the departments of studies.
