Sonapur College, Kamrup was established on 2nd August, 1991. It is one of the premier institution established with a mission to impart higher education among the students of the locality mostly from Tribal communities and to strive for an all round development of the students.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956 on 24th March, 2006 & 20th September, 2012 respectively. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "C++" Grade on 3rd May, 2004.

Sonapur College has paved its way to be recognised as one of the premier institutions of the state. This sacred temple of higher education is located on the tranquil peak of a hillock at Sonapur having all the blessings of Nature's greenery. marching ahead with the continuous pursuit of knowledge, which has all along been its avowed objective.

Since the day of its inception, the college has played a pioneering role in the spread of higher education in the South Eastern part of Kamrup District as well as the State of Assam and Meghalaya. Located at a distance of 20 kms from the capital, the college has successfully promoted itself as an academia of multidisciplinary institutions.

To cater to the needs of the present dynamic of the change and the dream of the local people, the college has introduced Information Technology (IT) and Travel and Tourism Management (TTM) as vocational course. Commerce stream in both HS and Degree level has proved to be milestone in the twenty years of its history.

Now the B.Com students are greatly benefitted as the Gauhati University, Guwahati has provided affiliation to the college to be furnished with examination centre.
 
The college is making considerable progress in the field of higher education wit a continuous effort to prove true to the ambition of the local people.

Academic achievements have become a regular feature of the college with students securing their place among the rank holders in Higher Secondary examinations and star marka as well. At Degree level examinations  our students have always given their best performance.

In the field of games and sports the college has produced a number of state level as well as national level players. Apart from the main goal of imparting higher education in the locality, the college indulges itself in may cultural, sports and literary activities by organising cultural programmes, seminars, workshops, sports meet etc. at various occassions. A multi-dimensional approach is what the college lays stress on to face the challenges of today's emerginf knowledge and economy.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts & Commerce stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts & Commerce stream under Gauhati University, Guwahati. It also offers some Career Oriented Courses / Add On Course.

The college also has a Contact Centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), Gauhati University for PG courses. Besides this, the college is running a Study Centre of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOPU), Guwahati.

Rules and Regulations at Sonapur College, Kamrup:

Uniform:

• It is mandatory for all the students to wear prescribed uniform.

  Students not  nearing the correct uniform will be restricted from entry into the college campus

Identity Card:

• Students must carry their identity cards to the campus and produce it whenever asked for. In case of loss or damageof the cards, the concerned authority must be informed immediately

Ragging:

• All forms of ragging, inside and outside the college, are prohibited and Sonapur College has no past evidence of the same. Strong disciplinary action will be initiated against of the students found to be indulged directly or indirectly in it

Classroom:

• During teaching hours all areas around classrooms will be observed as silent zones. The authority will deal with students who create any disturbance in the classrooms as they deem right

Notice:

• All students should read the notice board of the college regularly. Any notice desired to be circulated or pasted any where in the college premises shall require to seek prior permission from the college authority

Campus Cleanliness:

• Students are desired to maintain all forms of discipline in the college campus. Spitting, writing and stcking anything in the college campus is strictly prohibited. Anybody found doing this will be punished

Use of Mobile Phone:

• No students will be allowedto use mobile phone in the college campus. Disciplinary action will be initiated against those found violating this rule

No Smoking:

• The college campus has already been declaredas the “NoSmoking / No Gutkha/ No Tobacco/ No Drugs/ No Alcohol Zone”. Needless to surely invitepunishment from the collegeauthorities

Functioning of Scieties and Association:

• The Activitiesof only those societies and associations recognisedby the principal will be performed in the college premise

Students Union:

• Sonapur College StudentsUnion shall be subjected to such rules and regulationas the college authority may prescribe from time to time

Missing Belonging:

• Any missing belonging of any student found in the college campus mustbe deposited in the office
