Smt. S.R. Mehta Arts College, Ahmedabad was established on 15th June 1963 under the management of Vidya Bhavan Trust.
It is one of the institutions of the Navgujarat campus to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress. It has a total built up area of about 5500 sq. meters comprising a total of 14 Teaching classrooms.
The college is affiliated to Gujarat Univesity, Ahmedabad and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B).
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade - (CGPA Score 2.66 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) in the year 2013.
In 1963, a few years after the formation of the state of Gujarat, Prin. M.C. Shah founded the Navgujarat Arts & Commerce College. The western parts of Ahmedabad were just beginning to develop and a morning college which would cater to the growing middle class was of paramount importance.
With a handful of teachers and a few hundred students, the campus has now grown to a well-established and recognized hub of academic activity. In 1963, the two colleges of Arts & Commerce were born out of the original one.
In 1995, Navgujarat Arts College was renamed Smt. S.R. Mehta Arts College in honor of the philanthropist Smt. Shushilaben of Mumbai.
Today the college has a student strength of more than 1500 students. A firm belief in value based education and a deep sense of social commitment has been the hallmark of the college.
The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Arts stream under Gujarat University, Ahmedabad and also offers some professional or certificate courses like Spoken English & Proof-reading.
