Smt. Indira Gandhi Government First Grade College for Women, Sagar (Dist. Shivamogga) was established on 26th August 1991.

It is one of the premier institutions established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

The institution is affiliated to Kuvempu University, Shivamogga and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) of the UGC Act in April 2004 and subsequently received the recognition under 12(B) of the Act in February 2005.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade (CGPA Score 2.62 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 21st April 2012.

The college made its humble beginning with just 38 students in all UG and two UG programmes - one in Arts stream and the other in Commerce. Since then the college started making rapid strides in all fronts-student population, staff pattern, infrastructure and extension activities etc.

The college is known for its educational service constantly trying to offer quality education to the stakeholders- womenfolk of this area. Now the college houses four UG programmes - Arts, Commerce, Management and Science and two PG programmes - M.A in English and M.Com.

The student strength has been on the steady rise year by year and at present, it stands at 2550 including the two post graduate courses with 31 full-time faculties adequately backed up by 103 guest faculty.

The quality and professional competency of the teaching staff is high. Six of them possess Ph.D. and 14 possess M.Phil. and nine of them have passed NET/SLET and 07 Permanent Lecturers have registered for Ph.D.

The college has adequate physical infrastructural facilities located on campus area 4.793 acres with pretty good play ground, ample water facility and logistical advantage to accommodate administrative and academic programmes.
