Sikkim University (SU), Sikkim was established under Sikkim University Act, 2006. In July 2007, the University started functioning. The first Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University is Professor Mahendra P. Lama.

It was established and fully funded by the Government of India under an Act of Parliament. It is a central university. The educational jurisdiction of the University extends the entire state of Sikkim.

Sikkim University presently located at Gangtok, the capital town of Sikkim operates from several hired buildings located along NH-10. The main administrative office of the university is located at Samdur, 6th Mile, Tadong. The permanent campus of the university is coming up at Yangang in South Sikkim. The nearest airport and railway station are Bagdogra and New Jalpaiguri respectively.

Sikkim University is at present located in and around Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, which borders on Bhutan, China and Nepal on  its east, north and west respectively. Sikkim is one of the world's richest bio-university hot sports and one of the twenty top tourist destinations. The University is mandated to contribute to the nation-building process by mobilizing in rich intellectual heritage of the State of Sikkim, by promoting the creative talents of its youths and by developing itself as a premier national institution. Sikkim is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in India. The nearest airport is at Pakyong, East Sikkim which is about 31 Kilometeres from Gangtok.

Sikkim University is building a world-class campus on a plot of land measuring 300 acres at Yangang in the South District of Sikkim and located 56 Kilometers from Gangto, The The former President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, is his capacity as the Visitor of the Univesity, laid the foundation stone of the campus on April 16, 2013in the august presence of the Governor and the Chief Minister of Sikkim.

The site of the campus is conneted with Singtam town by a State Highway. On the northern fringe of the campus is a model tourst village with traditional houses, ultra-modern conferencing facilties, the children's park, etc. On its western front lies the upcoming skywalk project at a height of about 10,000 Feet atop "Bhaledhunga" Cliff and overlooking the upcoming University capus, "Bhaledhinga: will soon be a prime destination of adventure tourists and will be accessible from the campus through at truck route and ropeway.

The University is located in a very peaceful, accessible and naturally magnificent surrounding of Sikkim, contributing substantively to the nation building process by mobilizing the rich intellectual heritage of this region.

OBJECTIVES

To disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit.

To make provison for integrated coursesin humanities, natural and physical sciences, social sciences, forestry and other allied disciplines in the educational programmes of the University.

To take appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching-learing process, inter-disciplinary studies and research.

To education and train manpower for the developent of the State of Sikkim.

To pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfate of the people of that State, their intellectual, academic and cultural department.
